Go get 'em Coach Varney. All we can do is support the man and see where this goes. Should have a roster returning that almost any coach in Kentucky would love to have. Whether from his tragic passing or if Haywood would have retired, the outcome would have been the same in terms of who the coach is and these are Haywood's wishes.

I think all that needs to be said is Haywood built something better than was handed to him. Belfry had success before Haywood and even reached the State Finals. Haywood took that and made it better. He did it with dedication, hard work, passion, and a desire that what he was building was bigger than him. The same challenge exists for Varney now. He and his staff need to have the same mindset and realize that to grow this means working even harder than Haywood. Here's to hoping they accept the challenge.

Support this coach.. Honor Coach Haywood, but realize he is generational, and the new guy has to be his own man.. Give him a chance. I would say the boys from Belfry will be tough and fundamental like always.

I will promise you in no shape or form will BL beat Belfry !!! They could beat them by 100 if they wanted too.

Respectfully, Betsy Layne has a long way to go to beat Belfry, and it's not even about talent. It's about discipline and the true "little things" that coaches harp on. It takes staying with the same coach and teaching principles of said coach and staff for at least 6-8 years if not more (depending on where the program is at upon takeover) for it to really hit its stride.

Under Coach Haywood, Belfry did a better job at mastering those so-called "little things" than any program in Eastern Kentucky did over a three-plus decade stretch (and that includes Johnson Central and Pikeville who I have a great respect and admiration for and are right there with Belfry). That doesn't go away overnight especially with Belfry staying in house with a familiar name.

The Xs and Os may and likely will change for Belfry, but if the coaches who will be taking over the mantle stick to a message similar to what Coach Haywood had, the overall philosophy will not change and Belfry will continue winning and racking up trophies in various manners for a long time.

Best of luck Pirates!
