This game was never a question in who would win.
Pburg has problems for a person outside looking in and not someone just wanting to bash a rival. The players besides #14 on Pburg just look like they are out there to be out there. They know the offense is just give it to 14 and get out the way and hopefully he gets fouled every time he goes to the basket and scores 30 shooting free throws. None of the other kids feel like they are even an option to score the ball. They show no emotion and dismay when things are going good or bad. Like they are trapped or something. If I was 14s teammate, I’d tell him to go get the rebound and get a steal if he wants this ball from me. And I’m not bashing 14 because he’s a player and he’s just a sophomore but if they don’t figure out how to make things work around him. You going to have a Cameron Pente to just stick on him to slow him down and get him flustered when you play good teams. The other kids have to get involved.

As a non-outsider looking in: the team is miserable and tired of fighting and scrapping while simply running up and down the floor doing the dirty work while they watch forced shot after forced shot. This season can’t end soon enough. This coming from someone who couldn’t care less about basketball season and is 100% unbiased. Everyone on here knows my son plays and you can watch him and the rest of the team just stop caring midway through the first quarter when they watch the same crap over and over each game. The best thing to happen to Prestonsburg would be for certain kids to transfer to a prep school and have their “look at me” moments. Sick of watching this crap as I know others are as well but aren’t as outspoken as I am.

How in the world did Prestonsburg beat Pikeville?

Until here recently Pikeville didn't have all the things figured out. They didn't share the ball, didn't move the ball at all. It was a lot of one on one whoever brought the ball up the court. Now if you watch them, it's all clicking. The boys seem to be playing together and always making the extra pass to the open man whether it's for a cut to the basket or an open 3. They seem to have found some chemistry within the team and it's clicking at the right time for Pikeville.

At one point in the season, it looked as if Prestonsburg was turning a corner. They were sharing the ball, playing defense and really clicking. Now it’s back to watching one on five and you can visibly see the frustration. A good team is better than a great player but apparently I’m the only one on the Prestonsburg side that can see that.
As I’ve said many times: Keathley is a great player. But until he learns to stop spinning between 4 defenders and to actually give the offense time to allow the ball to come back to him, he’s just going to be a 30 point scorer on the worst “team” in the region. If you’d rather score 30 than see your team win, go play prep or AAU. I promise no one in Prestonsburg will care. But at the same time if the staff allows you to do the things he does, he’s not going to stop. I blame coaching as much as the player doing this. It’s just all systems failure at a program that’s about to fall to the level of Cordia after this year if major changes aren’t made.

That was a frustrating game to watch last as a Blackcat and it looked about like it did last year when the wheels fell off under Parsley. You had Keathley basically going 1 on 5 every other possession and you had at least 2 others basically giving minimal effort on either side of the ball. That’s the coaches fault. I’m not blaming players.
If one kid is forcing shots and not making passes to open guys (especially lead passes for open layups) then that kid needs a minute or two on the bench next to a coach. If some aren’t giving effort and not getting back on defense, then pull them and coach them up.
It wasn’t all bad for Pburg last night, second quarter they fought and played decent, but the Bobcats strengths are the Blackcats weaknesses and BL took advantage and Pburg eventually unraveled.
I thought the 8th grader, Graham Shutts give good minutes and even looked good late when Keathley fouled out. Kid has talent.
I’d like to see Pburg use Allen and Napier more in the post. Take some off of Keathley, especially in the half court early in games. Get those guys going. But there does need to be times when Keathley needs to take over, but it needs to be in stretches and not nearly the entire game. You can get away with it and beat bad teams, but any team with any offensive fire power and a solid defender to put on Keathley is going to give Pburg fits.
This Pburg team isn’t a bad team compared to everyone in the 15th. They can compete with almost everyone when they’re playing good ball, but when shots are forced, bad body language, and minimal effort on defense, then this team looks bad, real bad.
There’s still a lot of ball left to be played and time to get it right and keep it that way.
Go Blackcats!!!

Great post. The players know Braxton needs to score. You can watch them look for him when they get the ball. The problem is he rarely gives them the opportunity to look for him.

I may not agree with BCF4L on everything he posts and that’s okay, but I cannot blame him or other parents who have been around Blackcat basketball for as long as they have for being critical and frustrated.
How many players, coaches and parents have they seen come and go during his son’s high school career?
Blackcat boys basketball needs stability going forward. They need Braxton Keathley to stay at Pburg. They need the incoming 2029 class to play basketball and not quit for just football and baseball. That only happens if the coach sticks around and is willing to build relationships with the team and parents.

That only happens if the coach sticks around and is willing to build relationships with the team and parents.
Go Blackcats!

He averages a double double almost every game, a leader in assists for the team, leads the state in scoring even with being box and one’d and trapped every game. Parents and fans need to stick to being parents and fans. The problem with the team is one unhynged parent who consistently causes problems. Keathley barely touched the ball and was played mainly at center at the Betsy Layne game. The only time he was on ball was when he got the rebound. Stop pointing fingers at a student The jealousy is so thick with envy. How was your high school career? I don’t know if you remember how embarrassing it was, but I do. Braxton is clearly an excellent 1v1 basketball player, but basketball is a team sport. This isn’t a knock on him, I want him and this team to win. I want him to remain a Blackcat, but he has to adjust and someone needs to watch film with him and show him where he’s wrong and the consequences it’s having on the team.(02-01-2025, 05:07 PM)BlackcatAlum Wrote: That was a frustrating game to watch last as a Blackcat and it looked about like it did last year when the wheels fell off under Parsley.
Like I said earlier, it’s not all on him. Harold Tackett has the authority to either do what’s right and coach the kid or continue to allow this to keep going on and no one wins.

In his defense he said they "were" the better team, and they were that day, but only because Pikeville looked worse that day than any game I can remember in the last 10 years. Wouldn't think Prestonsburg could hang with Pikeville now but in the historically mediocre 15th this year anybody beating anybody isn't a huge shock IMO.

Was at this game, and body language sure says a lot, could tell in warm-ups that Pburg body language wasn't good, and it showed from the opening tip. BL has great guard play, and they will get right in your face and guard you. This has been a tale of 3 seasons for Prestonsburg, with how they started, then going on and winning 5 in a row, to where they are now, basically right back at where they started, if not worse than it was then.
I hate it for the senior players who have had to go through so much change & turmoil during their careers, just isn't right for them to keep going through it, but that's the unfortunate part of life, I guess. I remember the conversations back during the off-season on here how big of a mistake it was hiring Harold as head coach; to say it has been like it has, I'm not one bit surprised. I think I remember someone saying he was bringing a "calming presence" to the program, that may have been the case (but not really), but one thing there isn't, is stability. For the coaching staff to keep allowing what's going on isn't good, you can't blame the kid or kids on this team, just doesn't seem to be sense of control at all. Again, I hate it for the seniors, they have some solid young talent, especially the Shutts kid, he played some big-time minutes the other night and played well, he has a very bright future ahead of him, just need the right coaching staff in place to help with development.
With only a few weeks left in the regular season and heading into post season play, don't see much of anything changing for the Blackcats.

Pburg seems to not be having any fun on the court. As soon as they step foot on the court it looks like they can’t wait for the game to be over. Not that I blame them. I would imagine it’s not enjoyable playing with no ball movement.
