What happened to Hazard since the beginning of the season? When they had their 4-0 start I thought they would be a legit contender.  Tonight they couldn’t compete at all and were mentally out of the game midway through the 2nd quarter.

I know a lot of it had to do with Raceland playing well but looking at them physically  I thought they would be able to at least compete.

I stood on the Hazard sideline and listened to their coaches. They were very frustrated all night. Listen….its hard to run the rpo at this level. I actually think they are trying to do to much with the reads on their offense. On one play after the qb came to the sidelines the coach was asking about four different options on one play and was frustrated the qb couldn’t make the right read. That’s to much. Idk if the class a teams the rams have played are bad or our defense is that good cause most of the total offense that Hazard had tonight was after the clock started running

On our end something that looked really good was the passing game.  Waller made some really good throws and looks good going through his progressions.  He is also elusive under pressure and will only continue to get better this season and beyond.  

The special teams are looking good too and we actually have a decent kicking game which is a huge improvement from past seasons.   At this point in the season I think we are progressing on the right direction on all phases of the game.

Raceland played well.  I was disappointed in Hazard.  They looked bad on both sides of the ball.  I agree special teams play is doing good.  Raceland has always had great kickers.  I think the difference is we have play makers on special teams now.  In the past, it seemed to be just young guys trying to get game time.

Now back to reality. Both teams are playing much better and it’s looking like these two are once again the class of 1A. A month ago I was thinking that the landscape was changing but the simple truth remains that 1A is a two horse race. RPI may rear its head and have them meet before Kroger but make no mistake, these two are the “big fish in the small pond”.

I hope you’re right. A less top heavy 1A would be much more fun and I would love for them and Sayre to be competitive. I’m just not sold yet, especially with Raceland and Pikeville looking much improved.

What has impressed the most about this Raceland team is it is made up of a lot of 1st year starters and they are starting to look like an experienced team.  There are still areas that can be improved upon but overall this team has came along very well as the season has unfolded.  I think the progression this season speaks volumes about how the program is one that reloads rather than rebuilds.

I went out on a limb and predicted this one to be a 40-14 Raceland win. Thought it would happen later in the gems and that Raceland would pull away late.. damn sure didn’t expect a running clock at halftime. Hazard fumbled their first possession and the wheels instantly fell off the wagon, train went off the tracks, and it was a downward skid from there for the bulldogs. 0 first downs in the first two quarters. 120 total yards of offenses and 50 of that came from the last drive vs the Freshman. I’m sure Hazard was playing young guys at the at point as well, bc Shoptaw was the one that threw it I believe. I’m really at a loss. I thought Hazard would score some points. But how they scored 28 against Corbin is beyond me. Their QB plays super tight and that RPO system with a young and inexperienced line isn’t doing him any favors. Johnson is a good athlete, but Pelfrey was only able to get him the ball a few times. Hazards sideline was chaotic at times as well. Hazard lacked numbers but they have some stout kids on that team for sure. Good luck to the bulldogs the rest of the way. As for the Rams, the running clock should have been on about 4 minutes into the 2nd quarter if not for some boneheaded penalties. False starts, pointless holds (legit calls…just no need for them to have happened). Really liked seeing the offense be as diverse as it was. Lots of kids were involved and the play calling was a lot more diverse. Moving in a good direction each week. Onto Fairview.

This one really surprised me. I was sold on Hazard but the Breathitt game and this one really showed a lot of holes that needs to be fixed before they can make a true run. The first half against Corbin and their first few games showed what this team is capable of so I won't write them off just yet. Will be interesting to see how they bounce back after this one as they start district play against Paintsville next week. As for Raceland, they dominated every aspect of this game. Other than some bad penalities they played almost perfect. Hazard's defense did give them trouble the first quarter and half but the offense coldn't stay on the field long enough to give them a break. It was 7-0 after 1 and Hazard backed them up on several drives. Once the gas ran out though it was all Raceland.

Campbellsville was much more competitive against Pikeville in the semis than Raceland was in the finals last season.  And, with the RPI, Raceland or Pikeville might be making the trip to Campbellsville in the semi-finals.  That's going to be a challenge for either.
