Food plots
#1
What's your favorite types of food plots for deer? I was thinking of planting a couple acres of alphalpha....any suggestions?
#2
turnips, kale and rape. a whole lot cheaper. just go to farm supply and get your seeds.

Alfalfa is a very good choice, but seed is expensive and the soil ph is very critical. Soybeans are my choice, deer absolutely love them.
#4
soybeans are great,i always sow a little wheat with them as well.

Buckwheat and Anise are both fragrant crops that attract deer.

Buckwheat is also a great honey crop and your local beekeeper might thank you.

I want to create a small food plot in our woods. We have an area that is pretty cleared, and I thought about cleaning and planting there, but I have not found anything that could work well with limited sunlight. Any ideas?

Food plots are totaly awsome, anyone who has ever hunted over them would tell you the same. They drasticaly increase the number of deer that a piece of land can support, and the health of the herd. this can only be a good thing. All of the above mentioned food plot ideas are great ideas and have their own perks. Alfalfa is very high in protien and quite desireable to deer but it is very ph sensitive. and hard to get established without good soil. Soybeans are very high in protien, cheap and easy to plant but in areas with alot of deer it has been my experience unless you have a large plot that they will eat them into the dirt before they have a chance to produce the first bean{ and thus the protien}. I have had better luck out of white clover than anything i have ever planted. It also does much better with good soil ph but once you get it started and keep it fertilized it will come back for several years. Deer and turkey love it too. Remember to use only fertilizers with no nitrogen in them on clover and other legumes as well. They make their own nitrogen and any extra that you add will only feed the weeds. I use 0-20-20 on my clover

I agree. Low cost, easy to plant, plus deer love it. It'll also grow in the partial shade. You can't go wrong with clover.
