University Heights Vs. Raceland (ALL A CLASSIC) 1/26/2023
#1
There is a long tradition of battles between great mountain teams and University Heights.  Dating back to the days when Harland and Heights had some great battles in Richmond.  To Shelby Valley and the Blazers battling a few years ago.

This probably the deepest and most balanced UHA team in a long time. While their record doesn't reflect it, they are very good.  Probably the best defensive team in the second region.  They also have fire power and go 10 deep.

The blazers are led by senior guard Fremmy Northington.   He's a smooth 6'1 guard who is great at finishing around the basket, a good shooter and a very good ball handler.  They also have two outstanding junior guards in Quentin "q" Quarrels (yes another quarrels at uha) and Gavin Grubbs.  Quarrels shoots over 60% from three point range and is a bulldog defender.  Grubbs is an explosive point guard who is the best on ball defender in west ky.  As a team, University Heights defended travis perry and lyon county better than anybody all year.  They can switch at all 5 positions and dig in to defend.

The blazers upset the big tournament favorite, lyon county in the first round of the tournament earlier this month.  A game where Quarels was injured on a brutal elbow by Lyon County Big man Shoulders. (No call).  The blazers were in complete control of the game when he went out.  But held on to win fairly comfortably.

The blazers do have some size.  What was once  staple of the UHA program has been hard to come by in recent years.  Often fielding teams with nobody taller than 6'1.  The blazers start 6'5 sophomore Elijiah Walton who has a solid mid-range game, can make a 3 pointer and is a terrific rebounder and shot blocker. His backup is sophmore Kyler Baker who is also 6'5.

The blazers have a good "glue guy" in Cam brown and bring 4 guards off the bench to sport a legit 10 deep rotation.  This allows them to play aggressive man to man defense and not worry about foul trouble.

This strategy should prove to be effective in the always VERY physical all a tournament.  most teams never make the bonus in the first half and if the game isn't close, you don't see the bonus in the second half.  They've got to get the games in.  LOL.

i look for the blazers to dominate raceland in the first round and set up a matchup between two of the better teams in the touranment.  Owensboro Catholic and UHA.  More to come on that game if they both win.

What are everybody"s thoughts on Raceland?  They seem to be one of the poorer teams in the tournament.
