The 56th is going to be very weak this year. Usually there’s one team that kind of sticks out above the other 3 but with Estill’s Napier transferring to Perry Central, well….that has to weaken the Engineers quite a bit. With him still there they would be a clear favorite, and may be anyway.
So it’s difficult to pick a favorite this year. Lee has one of the top scorers in the state in junior Zach Watterson but they graduated most of his help from last year but have some good young players and a motivated coach. Owsley lost two starters but with the hiring of Neil Terry as head coach they now have his son Xander who was a starter for Jackson County last season. McKindrick Little, Seth Schott, and Trenton Combs, all starters last year, are back.
Powell has 6’5 center Chandler Congleton back and a host of guards to go with him.
Estill has a 5 seniors and although Napier is not there they still have talent.
My guess is they are number 1 going into the start of the season but only by a thread. The 56th is basically a tossup for the most part. That’s only my opinion. Who knows what might develop as the season progresses along. One of the teams may emerge as more dominant that the others.
As far as the 56th impact in the region, I don’t believe any of the teams are a factor. Breathitt, Perry, Knott, Wolfe, maybe Hazard or Letcher, are all regional contenders with Breathitt most likely sitting at number 1 and Perry at number 2. But Knott, the defending champs, are always in the hunt too, and could sneak in and win it again.
