The Cincinnati Enquirer has reported that Kenny Irons, the Cincinnati Bengals' second round pick in this year's draft, has torn his left ACL. He sustained the injury last night in the preseason game against the Lions, and will have season-ending knee surgery.

This is a big blow for the Bengals, who were counting on Irons to provide a change-of-place to Rudi Johnson, and also to reduce the number of carries for Rudi in order to keep him fresh. Now with Irons gone for the year and Chris Perry also likely out for the first several games, the Bengals' RB situation just became very iffy.
Best wishes to Kenny that surgery goes well and he is able to make a full recovery.

This is just one of those situations that makes you say, "Figures!" Offensively the Bengals will be top notch even without Irons but you are completely correct by saying that it would free up the load on Rudi giving him rest and giving Lewis different running shemes. I guess now more than ever, Palmer will HAVE to perform.

The Bengals expect him to be ready to go for next spring's minicamp, but for this year it really puts a crimp on the team's running attack. Chris Perry will apparently start the year on the PUP list, which means he'll have to miss the first 5 games of the year until being eligible to return to practice.
This puts a lot of pressure on Kenny Watson and Quincy Wilson, the two other returning backup RB's on the roster. Neither one of them is the home run threat that Irons or a healthy Perry would be.

Like I say in my first post, this will just ass to the pressure on Palmer. Not good at all. However, I think that we should be fine.

Wow. I know you're upset about Irons being out for the year, but that language is a bit strong, don't you think?

I know all about getting the chance to evaluate newcomers, but is the preseason really worth it? If I'm an NFL coach, I play my starters as little as possible. I'm not sure Carson, Chad, TJ, etc.....even need a preseason. And after what happened in last years preseason game, Im sure Clinton Portis of the Redskins would agree. It's a fine line between playing them enough to get the rust off and playing them too much.

Tough loss for the Bengals, hopefully he can have a successful surgery and get back to 100%

I didn't like the pick to begin with but I feel bad for the kid. I don't think it will hurt all that much as long as Rudi stays healthy. Rudi should get a lot of carries, which bodes well for those of us who have him in a fantasy league.

Rudi says he's willing and excited to take all the carries and to carry the load.

That's not necessarily a good thing. If Rudi takes all the carries he will get beat down and his yards-per-carry will suffer. He needs someone to take some of the load off, even if it's not till Game 6 when Perry comes of the PUP list.

I agree with you, and even before game six, I'm sure Kenny Watson and Quincy Wilson will also see some of the field, I'm just saying that he understands that he's going to get a lot more carries and carry a lot more of the load, and, chances are, he's getting in even better shape, and preparing physically and mentally for the increase in the demand.

I agree that they will need someone to divert the load off Rudi. In the first 6 games they have two of their hardest opponents of the year in the Seahawks-week 3 and the Pats-week 4. Perry won't be back before those games so Irons significance will be felt then.
I am not disagreeing with you or anything BFritz. I believe that Rudi is probably preparing in the best manner. I just hope he is not played too much. Watson and Wilson should be prepared to do their part. If they give support to Rudi that will free up alot of pressure on Palmer. It is like a domino effect.
I think that they will be fine though.

I remember back during the draft I was upset at the Bengals for drafting Irons with such a high pick. But the more I thought about it, it wasn't such a bad pick considering the questions surounding Chris Perry. Rudi's yards-per-carry dropped to about 3.8 last year, and I believe a lot of that can be linked to the increased workload he shouldered with Perry being injured so much.
I had hoped that with Irons on board, they could lower Rudi's workload and keep his legs fresher over the long haul, but now I guess we'll just have to hope Perry can go for game 6. If not, I think the rushing attack will really suffer by the end of the season, because Watson and Wilson are decent backups and nothing more.

I was the same way. At this point the big head sratcher is the extra QB that we aquired. Especially went some defensive players where still out there.

I was the same way back during the draft, but then the more I thought about it, the more I approved of the pick, because with Perry gone for the first six, Rudi could use a break and the Bengals could use a change of pace occasionally.
The QB I don't understand at all, especially that early, and I even think Irons could have been a bit later.
Defense, people.

I still think that a Kenny Irons type player would have still been in the draft in a later round so I am a little disappointed that they did not pick up some more high class defense. Like you mentioned.

Bad break for Bengals fans! Expecially after the trouble Perry has been getting into in the last couple of seasons!
