Does anyone have any yearbooks, pictures, newspaper articles, etc. concerning the Oil Springs High School basketball team of 1948-49. My grandfather, Bob VanHoose, was the starting center on that team (it was his senior year). I have a team picture of them, more than likely from the end of the season. All I know about that team that year was that they were the District Champs, but I am not even sure what district they were in that year.
I have done some research at the Painstville Public Library and found only a few articles from the whole season on the team. When the played Paintsville in December 1948, my grandfather got his name in the paper, "Only one player, Bob VanHoose, fouled out on the Oil Springs team." He fouled out but they beat Paintsville 41-36. I found another article concerning him later in April 1949. He was an "all-county" player and played on the Johnson County All-Star Team when they played the Floyd County All-Star Team. My grandfather scored 4 points and the team won 53-52.
That is all that I know of my granfather's high school basketball career, two newspaper articles and a small team picture. If anyone can help me find any old yearbook photos, or tell me anything else about this team, I would greatly appreciate it. My grandfather died in 2000 and I never knew any of this stuff about him, he never really talked about it. I mean I didn;t even know he played basketball in high school until a few years ago. I really wish I could talk to him now and ask him the many questions that I have.
If anyone can help I would be very greatful!!!!!!!
