PIKEVILLE, Ky. â The third-ranked University of Pikeville men's basketball team outshot Campbellsville 54-39 percent from the field on its way to an 87-66 win on Saturday in the East Ky. Expo Center.
UPIKE held Campbellsville without a 3-pointer (0-11) and won the battle of the boards 37-33 to overcome 33 points from Andrew Smith.
While the Tigers couldn't buy a 3, the Bears (25-3, 9-3 MSC) had their best effort of the season with 13 triples, led by Jayvian Delacruz going 4 for 6. Delacruz finished with 22 points and Chase Parsley tallied 13 and added three 3s as well.
Campbellsville (19-9, 4-8 MSC) made the first bucket of the second half to cut its deficit to 12, but that's as close as it got the rest of the way. At one point UPIKE led by as many as 27 points after a 12-2 run that ended with a 3 by Rze Culbreath.
It took just over five minutes for the Bears to reach a double-digit lead as they scored the first six points of the game before going on to take a 14-4 lead on a Rodney Hawkins free throw.
The UPIKE lead was at 11 with five minutes left in the first half when it went on an 8-0 run behind a pair of 3s by George Johnson and Jordan Perry and a runout slam by Darrion Leslie.
Campbellsville immediately called a timeout after falling behind by 19 on Perry's 3 and the discussion paid off as they rattled off six straight points to get back within 13 at 41-28.
Perry added an alley-oop dunk in the final minute of the half, but a late foul call on the Bears gave Adam Stanford the chance to shoot free throws with a second left, of which he made one, to go into the break down 43-29.
With Campbellsville only shooting 32 percent from the field in the second half, it took less than five minutes for the Bears to eclipse a 20-point lead at 59-38 on a layup by Hawkins. From that shot on it was never closer than a 17-point game.
UP NEXT
UPIKE has two regular-season games left and next up is a matchup with Life in Marietta, Ga., at 8 p.m. ET on Thursday.
