Man found under dorm bed
#1
Non-student accused of stalking ex-girlfiend in Dupree Hall

Laura Kersey

It might be a good idea to check under your bed before you sleep after all.

A 27-year-old man was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary on Feb. 28 after he was found hiding in a woman's dorm room, reported Eastern police.

Richard Lawniczak, of Berea, was found hidden under his ex-girlfriend's bed in Dupree Hall on the evening of Feb. 27.

According to the police report, the woman resident and a friend returned to her room from the Powell Building at 10 p.m. The report said a third friend stopped in to visit. The friend reached down to the floor to pick up a soda when she noticed Lawniczak under the bed. The three girls left the room and contacted the Dupree Hall Residence Hall Coordinator.

Lawniczak said in the report that he was let in the side door of Dupree by the woman resident and was told to hide under the bed.

Written statements by all three women said that they did not know Lawniczak was in the room. The report said that none of the girls wanted him near them because "they were afraid of him."

The woman resident told Eastern police that Lawniczak had in the past gained access into her room before by using an ID card on the door lock.

Chief Welker said that Lawniczak had several stories for why he was found in the woman's room.

"He had one version that even suggested that the victim let him in and she denies that," Chief Welker said. "So we're not real clear how he obtained access to the facility. It's a rather bizarre incident."

The burglary charge is only one of three arrests Lawniczak has obtained on campus grounds since December.

Lawniczak was arrested for disorderly conduct on campus two nights previous to the burglary charge on Feb 26.

The police report said Lawniczak was told to leave campus while at the Student Services Building. He told police that he was waiting for his girlfriend.

The report said Lawniczak became "irate" with the officer and attempted to walk away. The officer told him to stop, but he continued and was eventually restrained by the officer. The report said his actions caused alarm to the students at the building and around the area of Alumni Coliseum.

Lawniczak was also arrested and charged with DUI on Dec. 29. Chief Welker said actions are being taken to determine how to deal with non-students committing crimes on campus.

"If you don't have any business on campus you shouldn't be here," Welker said. "But we're having discussions about what we can do since this is a state institution and places ... like the library are open to the public."

Lawniczak served eight days in the Madison County Detention Center and was released.

His preliminary hearing was held yesterday morning at the Madison County Courthouse.

Crazy stuff. They really need to do something to prevent people from gained access to the dorms. That would be my number one concern right now.

In order to be able to even get in the dorms you have to have a key fob which you scan before the doors are even unlocked to you.

I know, I've been there but they obviously have something going on in order to allow him in. They can't really beef up the security that they have on the doors but he gets into way too much trouble on campus, and as pretty damn creepy, to just be let into society every time.

Yeah I agree it is creepy and they shouldn't just let him go everytime...I think they should at least give him a couple nights at the least. It is pretty scary knowing that pretty much anyone can walk in, even if they don't have a key fob they can wait on others to let them in. It's even scarier if the co-ed dorms because guys and girls come and go at all hours whereas in the all male or all female dorms it's kind of noticeable when a guy or girl comes in who isn't suppose to be there...

In co-ed dorms someone can just let you in the dorm or you can walk in with a crowd. There are ways to get around it. But it's harder in same-sex dorms like Burnam, Telford, Martin, and the others.
