Final from the Jungle.

Wasn't a pretty game, North showed some grit coming back from eight down entering final quarter. Held Corbin to five points over final eight minutes. Sure didn't hurt matters that Andrew Taylor fouled out with a couple minutes left, they are nowhere close to the same team without him.

2nd foul called on Taylor was terrible. Should've been a charge or no call. It would be in the khsaa's best interest to quit letting Wymt have 13th region games of the week. It only shows how bad and untrained the officiating is in the 13th on live TV. Not saying that's why Corbin lost, because it isn't. But something definitely needs done to get some training for officials in the 13th.

Impartial views from a mostly North Laurel fan. It was a very good atmosphere with nice crowd support from both NL and Corbin. NL really slowed the pace down last night, resulting in a very low scoring game. Broughton is a great scorer and Taylor is a great all-around player. Both kids could start for any high school in Kentucky. Taylor guarded Broughton the first 5 minutes of the game. During the time Taylor was guarding Broughton, Broughton didn't get off a shot and Corbin built a nice lead. However, Broughton did draw two fouls on Taylor during this first 5 minutes, which sent Taylor to the bench for the last 3 minutes of the 1st quarter. NL got back in the game quickly with Taylor on the bench. Taylor was never assigned to guard Broughton throughout the remainder of the game. Officiating was fair with a few calls being missed both ways. The worst call of the game was the block call that resulted in a technical on the Corbin bench sending Taylor to the bench with his second foul. This was a most obvious charge. The official made matters worse when he hesitated for several seconds before deciding if it was a block or charge. I would love to see these two teams play again in the regional tournament. I would give the slightest of edges to Corbin if they can keep Taylor out of foul trouble.
My take from this game is to win North Laurel better keep Broughton on the floor and Corbin better keep Taylor on the floor. Both teams are heavily dependent on their stars.

I'm a NL fan and was setting on the top row. It was an obvious charge. The same official missed several calls both ways. However, because this was Taylor's 2nd foul and because up to that point Taylor had completely shut down Broughton it had a big impact on how the rest of the game was played.

Wow!! I agree that the 13th region officials are the worst. But, to complain on behalf of Corbin is laughable. The officials in the 13th will not allow a player to guard the Taylor kid...period! If you get close to him, it's a foul. With that said, it's the same thing for the Broughton kid...will not allow him to be guarded. Everyone knows that North, South and Corbin get all the calls....especially Corbin.

It was a horrible call and no doubt should have been a charge on Broughton. However, it would take about 10 more calls just like that one to make up for the diddling from the refs that Lexington Catholic took when they came to Corbin earlier in the year.

You're not telling me anything. What's worse than the way Lex Cath was treated at Corbin tho, is the way 13th region officials treat local kids when you play Corbin. And, believe me, it doesn't just happen when you play Corbin at Corbin. If you play them anywhere that our 13th region officials are calling, you will get screwed. If Corbin gets out of the region, which they might, they will get throttled at Rupp.

Corbin has a good team and is capable of beating anybody on the right night. I like the way Corbin plays. If I had to pick a team to come out of the 13th today, I would choose Corbin,
Even though Lex Cath got homered in a major way at Corbin, it's hard for me to feel sorry for Lex Cath. You talk about home cooking, it seems sometimes that Lex Cath owns the Bluegrass Officials Association. There is one specific official whose family is a major financial contributor to Lexington Catholic, even to the point that Lexington Catholic has put up a big brass plaque honoring the family in their corridor. This official seems to get every big game Catholic has and it seems he gives Catholic every call.
The official problem in the 13th, and other mountain regions, goes back decades. I can remember some of the top officials were caught gambling and running sports book on games at the state tournament by the Lexington Police. They continued to get games and even continued to get assigned to the Sweet 16.
Just a couple years ago an email chain was intercepted between the assigning secretary of 13th region officials and a 13th region head coach collaborating on which officials would call which games.
A couple decades ago several 13th, 14th and 15th region officials were caught participating in the big Hazard Sweet 16 pool. The pool would some years have as much as $80,000. Now, you tell me if an official that is calling the finals of a regional tournament and the outcome of the game could determine if he has a chance to win $80,000, would that official wouldn't be influenced?

First and foremost let me start out by saying that Andrew Taylor is one helluva player. I mean really really good. If you don't believe me ask the dudes that are making hundreds of thousands of dollars to evaluate him think so. Having several D1 offers leaves no doubt thy he's a huge talent. With that being said so is Broughton. To say he shut him down in the first quarter is silly. As far as I remember Peyton didn't take a shot in the first until the on earth he took that he got fouled on. He didn't even look at the basket. Asher and Gray wine almost all the shooting in the first six minutes of the game. Trust me Peyton or Andrew can get there shot off at this level anytime they want it. They've both proved it hundreds of times. Why can't we just praise them both as a treat to our area and stop making it about this one shut the other one down or vice versa. I'm positive both would tell you the other is a handful to guard. I watched every second of the game and fell as both had really good minutes while the other was on the floor. Broughton guarded Taylor much of the second half and I'm sure Andrew would tell you Peyton done a great job on him. They are both tremendous athletes and I'm gonna miss watching them both like crazy!!

I think you said just what I did. Broughton is a heck of a good scorer. He didn't take a shot while Taylor was guarding him the first 5 minutes of the game. I'm not taking a thing away from Broughton.
However, Broughton didn't guard Taylor much. NL played mostly zone.

On the other hand, there are some 13th region officials that are very capable and I would put them up against the best in Kentucky. Two of the three were very good last night. I watched the Corbin/Harlan County game at Corbin and didn't notice one bad call. In the big South Laurel win against Covington Catholic, South may have gotten one or possibly two breaks from the officials but that's it. Another game that I didn't notice a single bad call was the Corbin/Lexington Christian game. Paul Nicholson is about as good of an official as you can find anywhere.

Lol. To think I would ever complain on behalf of Corbin is hilarious. I would be fine with Corbin losing every game they ever play, but it was a terrible call. It may have even a good flop, but even if it wasn't a charge, it definitely wasn't a blocking foul. Odd thing is, the ref that made the call and T'd up the coach, has always been regarded as one of the top 3 Corbin homer refs.

I definitely think Nicholson is one of the best refs in the 13th. There are several good refs in the 13th, but too many get emotional involved in the games. I think Nicholson, Hembree, Ashurst, and as bad as it pains me to say it, Ely. (sp?) If two of those mentioned can just ref, and not get caught up in trying to draw attention to themselves, they are as good as there is. I found out over the weekend that there are only 2 regions in the state that require their officials to go to camps in the off season. I think ever region should do that, and pay the refs significantly more, so they can get better officials.

I totally agree with you about Nicholson, I have long thought he was the absolute best in the 13th. No showboating, doesn't try to be bigger than the game, just solid, consistent officiating.

I would be ashamed to call that a win for Corbin vs LC. Very bad officiating

The topic of this thread is the game between North Laurel and Corbin.
If you'd like to start a thread entitled "Let's Bash the Harlan Co Bears", you may do so. It's what the last few posts were sounding like.

People can bash on officiating at Corbin and talk about LC and that doesn't get taken down but the second Harlan Co is mentioned it gets taken down? I thought the thread was about Corbin and NL, not officiating at Corbin or anything to do with LC? 🤔🤔🤔

The posts that were removed had nothing to do with the subject matter of the thread. If you want to talk about the officiating of the North Laurel/Corbin game, then that does come under the thread title.
Like I said, make your "bash Harlan" thread if that's what floats your boat but those posts are irrelevant here.
