Wow, this is the week that I have been waiting for in 2a football. This week several of the big boys in this class really step it up in competition. If this weeks top ten doesn't make you want to see some football well, you need professional help. So, without further ado, here is this weeks top ten:
1) #1 Mayfield 2a @ #9 McCracken Co 6a
Here is one of the premier new rivalries in the state. This is a game that I'm sure the entire state is watching for, just to see how good these two are. This rivalry is only 4 years old this year as the Stangs have only been in existence that long. This game has featured 2 OT games and the total combined margin of victory at 6 points over the previous 3 meetings. Mayfield won the first meeting by 1 point at home. The Stangs won the second by 1 point in OT at home as Mayfield went for 2. The last meeting went to the Stangs by 6 points in OT on the road. Mayfield has to feel as though they let that one slip through their hands. That being due to 3 missed field goals, a dropped pass in the endzone and some late penalties. This loss also snapped a Mayfield home winning streak that had started the first of their 09 season. Both teams appear to be better than last years versions. Both share a common opponent in PT, which they both handled. Both feature two of the best qb's in Western Ky and some really talented recievers. It will be a packed house and should be another classic.
2) #2 Corbin 3a @ #2 Danville 2a
Only with such an anticipated matchup as listed above could you ever find a game of this significance at #2. Here we have a battle of two #2 teams that are making a great deal of noise around the state. They are both also undefeated at 3-0. Both made huge pushes in the playoffs last year and both are certified perennial powers of Ky football. This turned into, from info I recieved, a sloppy fumbling mess of a game last year in Corbin as the Ads took it to the hounds 20-0. Corbin went on to a 9-5 season and many would say the second best team in 3a. Danville went on to a 13-2 season that ended only due to some sloppy penalties in the semi final matchup against the eventual state runners up. Danville has the great speed advantage this year and Corbin has the great size advantage. Corbin also has one of the better dual purpose qb's in the eastern side of the state. This should be a great matchup. Get there early to get a seat.
3) #5 Hazard 1a @ Somerset 2a (previously ranked)
Well, I bet you thought after the first two their would be a big let down here, WRONG. Here you have a matchup between two perennial powers of Ky football as well. The two share only 1 loss between them. The bigger school Bunnies come into this contest at 2-1 after a long bus ride up north last week. The Dawgs come in at a perfect 3-0 and looking to make a lot of noise in 1a. This game came down to a field goal last year as the Dawgs won 28-25. There is no reason to expect that it won't be as good of a game this year.
4) #1 Belfry 3a @ #5 Newport Cent Cath 2a
I fooled you again. No let down here. This is another matchup between two perrenial powers of Ky football. Both teams are coming off seasons that ended the first year in December on the carpet at BG. Belfry won the matchup on the road last year by a score of 28-10. NCC went on to a 9-6 record as the 2a state runners up. Belfry went 14-1 and state champs of 3a last year. Their only loss came to an out of state opponent. This year Belfry is again perfect at 3-0. NCC comes in at 1-2 after facing a brutal early season schedule. I think this could be another classic. Will it be the big upfront power running of the Pirates or the air raid with one of the top 2a qb's in the state?
5) #4 DeSales 2a @ #10 Lou Holy Cross 1a
Here we have another great matchup of two private school Louisville teams. Both appear to be on a role this year as they both come in sporting identical 2-1 records. Last year DeSales Colts won this one going away at 32-0. The Cougars went on to a 7-6 record finishing in the regional finals of 1a. The Colts finished just one game short of the promised land at 11-3 on the year. This should be a great game and also a packed house.
6) Apollo 5a @ Butler Co 2a (should be ranked)
Here we have a game between a small school offensive jaugernaut that should be ranked in the top ten and a much larger school. BC comes in smarting off a tough 1 touchdown loss to a very tough 1a team which many expect to play for hardware this year. BC is 2-1 on the year and are lighting up the scoreboards. When you have a qb with a name prefaced by the nickname "King" you know you got it going on on the offensive side. Apollo will look to use their depth to silence the superstar as they come in at 1-2 themselves. Last year BC took this matchup by a touchdown at 44-36. I look for this one to be equally exciting. If BC can duplicate the win again this year, I don't know how one could keep them out of the top ten.
7) Monroe Co 2a @ Barren Co 5a
Here we have another team that has pushed the ranks of the top ten in 2a as recent as last year, taking on another much larger school. Monroe comes into this one at 1-2 and Barren at 0-3. Last year Monroe win this hard fought matchup by a score of 28-12. They then went on to the second round of the playoffs with a 7-5 record. Barren had a disappointing 4-7 record on the year. I think this should be another hard found game.
8) Taylor Co 4a @ Green Co 2a
Here we have another small school team going out of their comfort zone to play a bigger school. We also have what appeared to be another great game from a year ago as Taylor won 28-12. That when was the difference in their records as well, as Green went 4-7 on the year and Taylor at 5-6. Green comes in this year at 1-2 and Taylor at 2-1. This too should be another great matchup.
9) Middlesboro 2a @ South Laurel 5a
Here we have a game between two 1-2 teams and another chance for a small school to steal a win from a much larger school. This game last year came down to a 2 td win for SL at 35-19. It was also the difference in their records as SL went 2-9 on the year and M went 1-10. This should be another good one to watch.
10) Ky Country Day @ Carroll Co 2a
Here we have a game between two teams that are very familiar with each other. It is also a matchup of teams that finished last year in similar fashion as KCD went 6-6 and CC went 5-6 on the year. Both are coming in with pretty close records this year as CC is 1-2 and KCD is 2-1. Last year, KCD won this matchup going away at 40-0. Can the boys from CC tighten it up this year? Should be a fun one to watch.
Well, there you go. Let me know what you think. I hope this one gets you pumped up. Everyone be safe in your travels and enjoy this week in 2a football.

Just don't use that back-up Rb Tyler Shauntrez. :worthy:

He and Bright share quiet a bit of time this year. That's the great part. You look at the stat line for Bright last week at 316 yards and 3 touchdowns. That is with about 2/3 the normal carries as Tyler was in for the rest. We will also see a good amount of Hurt out of the backfield this year, a bruising type runner. Depth is a great problem to have.

I really think this will be the best week in 2a football until late in the playoffs. We are just 1 day away.
