Harlan County with too much defense and too much Green. Congrats to the Lady Bears and Clay County can continue to build with the youngsters they have coming back. These will be two regional contenders for several years.

Thank you for posting the score walter.
Congratulations Lady Bears!!!
This was a low scoring game. Must've been a whole lot of defense going on.

Lot of defense and Clay slowed the pace down quite a bit. Actually a big turn around from the 22 point blow out earlier in the year. Lady Tigers learned a lot and have some things to build on. Good luck to the Lady Bears. Could be an all Harlan County final.

Congratulations Lady Bears. Good luck in the semi-finals against South Laurel. I actually think HC has a little easier game (If there is such a thing this time of year) as compared to the Harlan and North game.

Clay got better as the season progressed with those young players, I think HC and Clay will be preseason 1 and 2.

I agree, and the age of the team members for both squads is very encouraging. Actually, I believe Clay may be a little younger over all than HC.

Harlan and HCHS will be No. 1 and No. 2 in one order or the other.
Harlan still has Brock, Bianchi and King next year and they're 15 points better than Clay now.
I think Clay, North and South will round out the top five, but I'm not sure on the order yet.
Clay loses Roberts and North loses Bruner, so North takes a little bigger hit, but I think they are a little better overall, even with the loss last week.

It's pretty close.
Clay has a senior starting, plus three freshmen and an eighth-grader. HCHS starts two sophomores and three freshmen with another sophomore who started before an injury. Clay does lose its best player though.

HC loses no one.
south loses no one
clay loses roberts
north loses bruner,raines and sexton
corbin loses jewell, philpot and wilson
harlan loses massingill

Its gonna be very competitive next year

Harlan loses two starters. Bell loses four starters. Corbin also loses Gulley, in addition to the 3 you mentioned.
Whitley just loses 1 starter, I think. They will also be in the mix for the top five.

Yep. I was just naming kids off top my head that was hard to replace for each team. North I think has the young talent to replace sexton and rains but hard to replace bruner. Harlan will miss massingill too.

Losing Massingill will hurt Harlan more then people may think.

I would think that Harlan Co. and Harlan City will be 1 and 2 in the region next year, not sure which order. Harlan Co. loses no players to graduation and will return a couple that are currently injured. Harlan loses Massingill but they do return Brock, Bianchi and King and that is a very good core group. Plus they have a transfer from Harlan Co that will be eligible and she will help at guard.
After those 2 I think South Laurel, Clay Co. and North Laurel will round out the top 5. No particular order on those, but probably as of right now will be the next best 3 teams in the region and could beat the top 2 on any given night.
After those 5 I think Whitley Co. will be a solid 6. Then think you'll have Corbin, Bell Co., Knox Central, Jackson Co. in no particular order to round out the top 10.

It will be interesting to see who fills those other two spots for Harlan. Simpson was the 6th man and plays guard, and Haywood was next and plays forward. It's going to be hard to keep Natalee King out of the lineup with her talent. Canady, from Harlan County, could also be in the mix.

Looks like good things to come in the 13th region again! I didn't realize that Brock and King would both return. Harlan City will be a huge force next year!!
03-02-2016, 07:36 PM
Yes it is very possible that Harlan City will be the favorite next season as well. Will be interesting though if Coach Akal were to take the boys job at Harlan. He wanted it last time and he has a son that is coming up that is a very nice player!!

Wow a all Laurel County/Harlan County semi-final...
This is just my opinion and feel free to yours but I think it will be hands down Harlan County #1 next year... This isn't because of Green either. She is going to be a Major D-1 kid and will do great but as far as impact on the floor in the 13th region Gross is the player that I think no one has an answer for. Harlan will miss Massingal and lose one of the Kings and depth is not a strong suit of theirs already... simpson and King or Canady will not fill that hole. The one thing that may raise them back to a #1 position for me is Bianchi. She is one of my favorite players to watch and if she starts to score like I think that she could then that could be a difference maker. I have always thought she takes a back seat because of the great scoring of brock and Massingal.
I think Clay will actually be better next year even though they lose Roberts. Putting the ball in Mathis' hands and there young pg who is a 7th grader will make them even more dangerous. I really like North and South laurel for next year too... but here would be my top 5 for next year.
Harlan County
Harlan Ind
North/South
Clay
Knox/Whitley/Pineville in my next group who could beat out any of the 3 above them if they don't develop like I think they will.

I have to make a correction and take Pineville down a group... I didn't realize the post was a sr. I was very impressed with her.

Looks good. I'd add Corbin and Bell in the group with Whitley and Knox even though both lose a lot. When you've got a solid program like they do, they almost almost remain competitive.

Next year will be one of the best years for girls basketball in the 13th region in quite a while. Actually things should be good for several years.
