I wonder if they will offer it to Derrick Akal? He is an excellent coach!
I'm sorry that Dave Parks stepped down. He is such a good person and great coach.

I believe his oldest son graduates this year. His youngest son gave up basketball for football (that's what I heard). Anyway, that youngest son is a great quarter back.

So is this true?

yes it was true it was in the local newspaper i heard a coach who is a preacher is interviewing for basketball i don,t know if thier any truth to that or not

The rumor I've heard for the last several weeks is Akal. With his son, who is an excellent player, entering junior high, it would be a good time for Akal to move into the boys job to coach him. The only thing that makes me question that is he would be stepping away from a really good girls team.

Nick Napier. Nick is on Lewis Morris' staff at Bell County. Before that he spent several years on Billy Hicks' staff at Scott County. He comes highly recommended. I'm not sure if he would be interested in the position.

There will likely be a coach hired for next year that understands Akal will take the job the following season. He will probably want to coach the girls again next season and then move on to boys. Look for someone already on the staff or at the school to fill the job next year.

It would be very unfair to ask a coach to accept a position under those conditions. 1 year and your out.
03-02-2016, 08:22 PM
I've heard the same thing. It will be a one year deal and Akal takes over the next year. Hire will come from within.

Having a coach for only one year would also be unfair to the players. Three coaches in four years would not be good for the team.

Is their any talent to work with?
03-04-2016, 06:49 AM
The team lost two of their better players for most of the year with knee injuries. One was a sophomore who will be back next year. One of their most talented players was a freshman who started every game. He did not play JV. The JV team was 14-2 this year. They were all freshmen, except one sophomore. They won several other games against freshman competition. I would say they have some talent.

Freshmen class has some talent however they have no size. If they had a kid with some size to throw in the mix then they could be competitive

I'm guessing they will enter the season somewhere around 10th in the region. I would have liked to see how their freshman team would have fared in the freshman regional. It wasn't as strong this year as usual. Harlan didn't play a very strong JV schedule.

I would have liked to see them play in the freshman regional also. I especially would have liked to see them play Harlan County. I know everyone likes the boys-girls double header, but you miss getting a glimpse of the future when the JV or freshmen don't play. And Harlan's big problem was, is, and looks to be a lack of size.
03-05-2016, 07:44 PM
I agree with all that, except liking doubleheaders. I've always hated them.
I'd like to see a frosh, JV and varsity tripleheader when possible, especially weekends, and always at least a JV game except in tournaments/classics.
