State Championship Predictions
#1
1a - Pikeville vs Beechwood ... This is a game with 2 of the better offensive teams in 1a going at it.. What makes both of these teams so good is the balance between run and pass.. It's hard enough to prepare for a good running game or a good passing game, but, these teams have both.. When that happens, it usually comes down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes and the D who can step up and get that one or two extra stops. Both defenses have been up and down this year, but, the Panthers are the more physical team and in cold games in December, that physicality typically takes it's toll on it's opposition.. Pikeville 42 Beechwood 34'

2a - NCC vs Mayfield ... NCC struggled for a lot of the 2015 campaign, while Mayfield cruised thru it's regular season foes in typical fashion finishing at 14-1, with an o/t loss to a ranked 6a team as it's only blemish. While they may have taken different paths to the finals, make no mistake, it'll take both teams A games to knock off the other. With Smith and Bright, both teams have go to running backs and both have capable backups. IMO, the difference here is in the passing game. The Cards are equally as potent thru the air. In addition, I give the edge to the Cards on the defensive side of the ball. They may bend, but, you can bet, they'll make adjustments and put the clamps down as the game wears on... Mayfield 23 NCC 14

3a - Belfry vs Lex Catholic ... Often, what makes a game is a contrast in styles and in this game, you have 2 totally different philosophies.. First, you have the high scoring air raid type offensive team in Lex Catholic and then you have the between the tackles, power game of the Pirates.. Who takes this, power or finesse.. In asking that, it's not as if Belfry can't throw the ball and open things up and its not like LC can't run it behind a strong and athletic OL, it's just not typically their styles.. And, in this one, I see these 2 sticking with what they do best and while I see LC making a few big plays, in the end, I'll take the more gifted power team, especially this time of year.. Belfry 27 LC 17

4a - Johnson Central vs S.Warren ... This has been the 2 best teams in the class from day 1 and one or the other has owned the #1 ranking every week.. JC has battled thru several key injuries the latter part on the season and into the playoffs, but, are just about as healthy as they've been in some time, heading into the title game.. S.Warren has been the picture of consistency, if there ever was one, especially on the defensive side of the ball. These guys are one of if not the best defensive teams in the state.. JC has one of the top running games in the state that will put a challenge on SW, but, to beat them, you better be versatile and be able to keep that D off balance or they'll simply stack the box and make no mistake, they will stop you once they make that commitment, unless you have some secret weapons up your sleeve.. I'm not thinking there's enough trick plays to fool those S.Warren kids.. SW 28 JC 7

5a - Pulaski Co vs Bowling Green .... You have 1 team plying in it's own back yard and the other, less than an hour away, so, you can expect a full house in this one.. The Purples lost their crown last year, after several years of domination, while Pulaski took the crown and have no intension of giving it up without a fight.. Both teams come into this one playing it's best ball of the season.. Pulaski Co must control the ball with long, sustained drives that result in points and keep that Purple offense off the field as much as possible.. Both offenses are going to score and both defenses will get some stops.. I don't really see either team dominating the other and the difference coming down to who protects the ball better and has the fewest turnovers and penalties.. I think the Purples reclaim it's perch on the 5a crown... BG 28 PC 14

6a - Lafayette vs Male ... Lafayette has had a stellar year but hasn't been talked about much, mainly because when they stepped up the competition, they didn't fare too well.. But, make no mistake, this team is loaded with D1 talent.. The problem is across the field.. Male also has D1 talent, skill players galore, big and nasty line play, fast LBs, tough RBs, WRs that go up and get it and are playing with a confidence level not seen in Ky HS FB in quite some time.. There's a reason these guys are rated nationally and you'll see why come Saturday.. Male 49 Lafayette 14

Pulaski is not less than an hour away from Bowling Green....but they will still pack the house as they travel very well.

It's an hours drive, taking a few minutes either way, from Somerset to BGreen..

You may well be right. However, I would prefer to see all the games go the other way.
