After back-to-back close defeats to Trinity and St. Xavier, Manual High School football coach Oliver Lucas said his team didn't need another moral victory.
"Moral victories still go in the loss column," Lucas said.
The Crimsons bounced back for their biggest "W" of the season Friday night.
Michael Nero rushed for 233 yards and three touchdowns and the Crimsons got the late defensive stand they couldn't get last week to post a 32-29 victory over rival Male in front of an estimated crowd of 13,000 at Manual Stadium.
Male (8-1) - No. 4 in the state in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings - entered as the buzz team after an historic sweep of St. X and Trinity the past two weeks.
But it was Manual (7-2) that got its fourth straight victory in the Old Rivalry, a series that dates to 1893. Male leads the series 80-45-6.
Male still will be the No. 1 seed from Class 6-A, District Four and will host Oldham County in a first-round playoff game in two weeks. Manual will be the No. 4 seed from the district and play at Fern Creek, Ballard or Eastern - based on the outcome of a tiebreaker - in the first round of the playoffs.
"Momentum is on our side," Nero said. "We really needed this win here. Going back two weeks against Trinity and St. X, we couldn't win the close games. We came out against our old rival and won the close game. That's big."
Male scored on its first two possessions for a 14-0 lead and still led 21-19 at halftime before Nero made the game's biggest run in the third quarter.
On second-and-5 from his 13-yard line, Nero went up the gut, spun out of a tackle and raced 87 yards for a touchdown that gave the Crimsons a 25-21 edge.
Nero credited an offensive line led by tackles Jacob Key and Austin Lotspeich, guards Mike Burba and Khalid Neil and rotating centers George Dailey and Hayden Vinegar.
"I think we have one of the best lines in the city," Manual quarterback Mason Motley said. "They're undersized, but their technique is so good."
Motley helped Manual pad its lead on its next possession, hitting Matthew Cissell for a 7-yard touchdown pass that made it 32-21 with 30 seconds left in the third quarter. Motley finished 9 of 18 for 92 yards and two TDs.
Ellis Cain's 2-yard touchdown run and Davis Mattingly's two-point conversion pass to Zach Hall pulled Male within 32-29 with 6:51 remaining. The Bulldogs seemed to have all the momentum after a poor punt gave them first down at the Manual 36 with 4:59 left.
Male eventually moved to the 2-yard line, but Cain was thrown for a 1-yard loss on second down and a 2-yard loss on third. Instead of going for a potential game-tying field goal, Male coach Chris Wolfe chose to go for the win on fourth down. Mattingly's pass to Keion Wakefield in the front-right corner of the end zone fell incomplete.
Wolfe noted Male had missed a 28-yard field-goal try early in the fourth quarter.
"It was on the far-right hash, and we were on the far-left hash before and missed it," Wolfe said. "What do you do?"
Mattingly finished 25 of 42 for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Cain rushed for 111 yards and a TD on 24 attempts.
For the Manual defense, it was redemption for last week's 24-23 loss to St. X. The Tigers won on a 23-yard touchdown pass on the game's final play.
"I knew our defense would come back and get that stop after last week's loss," Motley said. "Last week's loss is what helped us win this game. I'll take this week's win over last week's loss. We fought to the very end."

Such a shame this thread has such little replies when it should be the most talked about game in the state.
This WAS huge.
How many times do you see a district 4 seed in the playoffs beat there own district champion?

There are so little replies because Male and Manual aren't located in Eastern Kentucky.
If Manual would have beaten St. X last week, that would have made this district VERY interesting by throwing it into a 3 way tie for first between Male, Manual, and Trinity. Jason Frakes from the Courier-Journal mentioned that all six games played in this district were decided by an average of 6 points. The largest margin of victory was Trinity's 29-17 win over St. X. All four teams are very close and very good, but only one will advance out of the region. Weeks 2 and 3 of the playoffs should be between these four teams.
