Kentucky basketball..where's the talent.
#1
During some recent discussions I saw a list of KY Mr. Basketballs dating back to 1990. If you look at the lists for Ohio & Indiana there is a no comparison in the talent level. What's up with that?

1990 Dwayne Morton Central Louisville 1994 NBA Draft: 2nd round, 45th overall by the Golden State Warriors
1991 Jermaine Brown Fairdale Georgetown (KY)
1992 Tick Rogers Hart County Louisville
1993 Jason Osborne Male Louisville
1994 Elton Scott Marion County West Virginia
1995 Charles Thomas Harlan[10] Eastern Kentucky
1996 Daymeon Fishback Greenwood Auburn
1997 Brandon Davenport Owensboro Lindsey Wilson
1998 J. R. VanHoose Paintsville Marshall
1999 Rick Jones Scott County Murray State
2000 Scott Hundley Scott County Vanderbilt
2001 Josh Carrier Bowling Green Kentucky
2002 Brandon Stockton Glasgow Kentucky
2003 Ross Neltner Ft. Thomas Highlands Vanderbilt
2004 Chris Lofton Mason County Tennessee 2007 SEC Player of the Year
2005 Domonic Tilford Jeffersontown South Alabama
2006 Walt Allen South Laurel Asbury
2007 Steffphon Pettigrew Elizabethtown Western Kentucky University
2008 Darius Miller Mason County Kentucky 2012 National Champion 2012 NBA Draft: 2nd round, 46th overall by the New Orleans Hornets
2009 Jon Hood Madisonville-North Hopkins Kentucky 2012 National Champion

Kentucky is quite a bit smaller than Ohio and Indiana.

Also, Charles Thomas signed with and played two years with the University of Minnesota, not Eastern. He was the sixth man on a Final Four team in the 90s.

HDE, thanks for the catch on Charles Thomas. I understand the numbers are much greater in Ohio & In. Guess I was just a little surprised to see how few of the players on the list went on to have much impact, even at the major college level let alone professional basketball.

Rick Jones signed with and played at Vandy.

Thanks,Jones did spend a short period of time at Vanderbilt. After some problems there Jones then transfered and played his jr. & sr. seasons at Murray State.

Charles Thomas played on the 1997 Minnesota Final Four team!!!

That's what it's all about! Love seeing young men from our state getting educated for free.

All a numbers game. Both Ohio and Indiana have many more high schools and a lot more urban areas than KY does. Why I love when our high schoolers beat the Indiana kids in the annual all-star game. This year's class will make a good showing but I think our 2014 class could get a sweep if all the best players come out for the team.

How is Elisha Justice doing at Pikeville?

All the Kentucky talent is at Cordia....

This was a copy and paste originally taken from Wikipedia. I should have taken time to study this information. Nobody pulls any harder than I do for Kentucky kids to be successful not only when competing in sports but life in general, and you're spot on in regards to the free education.

The college listed is NOT who he signed with, but who he ended up with.

Tilford originally went to Cincinnati.

Allen originally went to Presbyterian.

Although Thomas should say Minnesota or EKU/Minnesota like Justice's says Louisville/Pikeville.

Thomas originally signed with Minnesota (in high school) and played for two years.
He never played at EKU. He hurt his back.

It's weird now how we produce higher quality football talent than basketball talent, haha.

Many places say Thomas appeared in ONE game for EKU in the 1998-99 season.
He didn't play anywhere in 1997-98 (transfer year? injury?).

Yup. Found it.
Thomas played for EKU on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998. A 61-56 loss to Georgia State.
Played 18 minutes of the bench that game and scored two points, going 1-for-6 from the field.

Boxscore from his lone EKU game:
http://statsheet.com/mcb/games/1998/12/3...entucky-56

He even shows up in EKU's season stats from 98-99.
http://colonelsreport.com/eastern-kentuc.../1998-1999

http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/minnesota...=1996-1997
As a Minnesota sophomore, he played in every game but one. Never started. Averaged 14.6 minutes and 7.0 points per game. High game (points wise) was 14.

Can't find his Minnesota freshman season (1995-96) stats.

1997 Brandon Davenport (Owensboro) - Lindsey Wilson..I'm thinking he played a season or two @ Morehead State before transfering down.

The same was true 25-30-50 yearsa ago. They should turn out
more top talent than ky. based on that. But why is it that our
state which used to annually produce maybe 8-10 legit D-1 players every
year, seems like it can only produce 1 or 2 in a good year now?

It's downright mystifying. All the numbers factors are even
MORE pronounced in football than basketball.
