â The University of Pikeville defense held No. 25 Campbellsville University to 174 yards of total offense and held on for a 14-7 win on Saturday night at Findley Stadium.
It was the second straight season the Bears have beat Campbellsville on the road. The Bears are now 2-0 on the season and will head home for the first time next Saturday when they play Lindsey Wilson College at 1:30 at the Hambley Complex.
Pikeville has played only one game with a lower score, a 7-3 loss to Cumberland (Tenn.) University at Prestonsburg in the final game of the 2002 season.
Campbellsville, which lost its season opener for the first time since 2008, scored the first touchdown of the game with 8:57 left in the opening quarter when junior Bryan Parnes scored on a 33-yard keeper. The Tigers would net only 102 yards on 33 carries, but the rush, with freshman Eric Krivitsky adding the extra-point, made it 7-0.
The Bears evened it late in the period, when a 12-play, 74-yard drive that took 5:14 off the clock ended when sophomore Hunter Adams scored on a six-yard run. Sophomore Grayson Quick tied it with 1:51 to play.
UPIKE's next score â what would prove to be the last one â came on another long drive, when the Bears went 88 yards on eight plays. For the second straight week, senior quarterback Trevor Hoskins found Shawntez Johnson on the sideline. He eluded a defender and dove into the end zone for a 24-yard score.
Quick's PAT, coming at 11:26, made it 14-7.
From there, the Bear defense dominated, holding the Tigers to only 174 yards of total offense in the win. The offense, while kept off the scoreboard, dominated the clock after halftime, keeping it for 20:02 of the second half.
The Tigers finally got untracked with one final try to tie the game. Getting the ball at their own 38 with 2:44 to play, the Tigers picked up a pair of first downs, including a conversion on a 4th-and-4 from its own 44 when senior backup quarterback Robert Hill hit senior Demetric Ray for 17 yards to the Bear 39.
Campbellsville, facing a 3rd-and-8, dropped back to pass, but senior defensive end Chris Watson, a power forward on the basketball team, drilled Hill for a seven-yard sack to set up 4th-and-15.
After a timeout, Hill's pass to Ray was incomplete, giving the Bears the ball with only 33 seconds to play.
Pikeville ran 50 times for 127, with Hoskins leading the way with 44 yards on eight tries. In the air, he was 10-of-25 for 124, with Johnson catching three for 76 yards.
Parnes led the Tigers on the ground with 53 yards on nine carries. The combination of Parnes and Hill were 8-of-23 for 72 yards.
Ray's 21 yards on two catches led the receiving corps.
Junior end Taylor Woods led the Bears with eight tackles, while sophomore linebacker John Dudley Hilton added seven. Junior Rory Spain followed with six tackles and a fumble recovery.
Campbellsville linebacker Nick Reed had 10 tackles, including six for loss, to lead the Tigers on defense.
