Tollesboro High School
#1
Does anyone remember Tollesboro High School, why it closed down, and where the school was/ is located?
#2
It apparently closed down due to dwindling attendance numbers. Located in Lewis County, almost exactly between Maysville and Vanceburg, Right off the AA Highway. They protested the school closing, but students from Tollesboro were relocated to Lewis County High School which was already in existence.

do you know if the old school is still up, or if they knocked it down?

Not sure.

I believe a lot of it had to deal with Tollesboro having a school and Vanceburg wanting to close it.

Here is an article I found on Tollesboro.

The building is still standing.

While consolidation was necessry for economic survival, the magic of Kentucky high school basketball has been diminished considerably by the loss of the small schools like Tollesboro. The intensity and pride of the fans is not near the same for the large consolidations as it was for the small community schools. For example, Greenup County does not engender the fan support of its predecessors- Greenup, Wurtland, McKell, and South Portsmouth. And, all those little schools in the 15th Region and 14th Region were sources of pride for their supporters.

thanks guys, and i agree truth, these big, consolidated schools dont come close to having the pride and enthusiasm that the small and independent schools do. however, money doesn't grow on trees and i can be tough keeping those schools open. you can start to sense that the state would like to take over some of these small schools and struggling districts that are open now

Really miss the days of Feds Creek High

I too understand the small school pride. I'm apart of a small independent school district In the rough river area. Our boys basketball team lost 89games consecutively from 2005-2009. We broke that streak in the 2009-2010 season. The small town acted like they just won the national title. The school is called Frederick Fraize. Please check it out people. Keep an eye on us for the next couple of years.

3 Jackson City
4 Deming (Robertson County)
5 Augusta
6 Fulton City
7 Burgin
8 Eminence
9 Fulton County
10 Pineville

I will always be a fan of schools like Frederick Fraize.

I figured Barbourville would have cracked the top 10 on that list.
