Hillard excited about Panthers’ future
by Tim Branstetter / Staff Writer

The Knox Central Panthers had a tough season, but they finished strong and were able to build on some positives for the future.

The Panthers struggled to get going on offense, but were able to put together a solid defensive effort by the end of the season.

"We put together some good games," Knox Central coach Brandon Hillard said. "We got better and played solid defense. We struggled on offense, but the good thing for us was our defensive effort."

Knox Central rode an eight-game skid into the district tournament, but managed to advance to the championship game. The Panthers were defeated, 7-6, by Barbourville.

Tyler Gilbert was forced to play through some pain, but was able to lead the Panthers at the plate.

"One of the things that were disappointing was that Tyler's body didn't respond for him," Hillard said. "You would like to see things end better for the seniors, but they were able to stick their nose in there and grind it out."

Hillard is excited about the future for Knox Central baseball and feels the young talent will be ready to step up and complement the returners next season.

"We have a good amount of talent coming up next year from middle school," he said. "We also have a good core group of kids returning."

Dustin Bingham will return for his senior season after gaining some valuable experience on the mound.

"Bingham got a ton better on the mound," he said. "That gives us confidence for next season."

The Panthers not only take pride on the field, but they also take a lot of pride in the classroom and it has paid off. Hillard's squad included seven kids that have earned top honors off the field.

"We take a lot of pride in the classroom," he said. "We had seven All-State All-Academic members. I would love to see us get in double digits of All-Academic members."
