I was going to the Expo to watch East Ridge tonight, but I went early to watch Johnson Central. I hadn't had the chance to see them this year, I had to miss the game they played at East Ridge. I must say I was very impressed with Shane Hall, the guy is a great player.

Same thing I said. And BL's guard play was absolutely horrendous.

PIKEVILLE — Johnson Central played for more than just itself Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles played for the hundreds of thousands affected by the severe weather outbreak which ravaged parts of Johnson County on Friday night.

Freshman point-guard Braxton Blair scored a game-high 19 points to land the Golden Eagles into the 15th Region championship game for the first time since 2008 with a lopsided 61-36 victory over Betsy Layne at the Eastern Kentucky Expo Center.

Johnson Central will play East Ridge on Monday night for the right to go to the Sweet Sixteen. The Golden Eagles won their last regional championship in 2006.

The regional semifinal had an underdog feel as all district champions were eliminated in the first round.

“Some might be surprised we are here, but I’m not,” said JCHS coach Tommy McKenzie. “When we give maximum effort, we’re as good as anyone.”

They were far more superior Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles (23-10) never trailed. They stormed out of the gate, scoring the game’s first nine points and built a 32-15 lead at the half. Betsy Layne (23-6), the 58th District runner-up and defending 15th Region All A champion, shot 30 percent from the floor on 14-of-46 attempts.

The difference was rebounding and points off turnovers. Johnson Central outrebounded the Bobcats 35-25, including 22-9 in the first half. The Golden Eagles finished with 24 points off rebounds compared to Betsy Layne’s four.

“We played timid, and we didn’t attack the basket,” said Betsy Layne coach Junior Newsome. “[Shane] Hall forced us away from doing what we do best — attack the basket. We had way too many turnovers and did not capitalize on [Johnson Central’s] mistakes.”

Sophomore Shane Hall finished with 16 points and five rebounds. He said the 57th District tournament championship loss to Sheldon Clark (65-51) “sent us a wake-up call.”

“We really recommitted ourselves,” said Hall, who shot 4 of 7 from the floor and hit 8 of 11 free throws. “I think we are playing our best basketball, and we’re not looking back.”

The Golden Eagles (23-10) shot 50 percent from the floor on 22-of-44 attempts, including 3 of 11 from behind-the-arc. They also made 14 of 20 free throws (70 percent).

Dylan Meade led Betsy Layne (23-6) with eight points.http://dailyindependent.com/localsports/...ion-finals
