The Trojans had spurts where they played well and looked capable of pulling out a win, but they had too many stretches where they struggled to score where turnovers. They also failed to keep the Tigers off the offensive glass at times which cost them dearly.
âWe got beat by a good team,â North Hardin coach Ron Bevars said. âWe didnât have any consistency. No consistency. We didnât quit. We kept battling, but we didnât play consistent enough.â
That could describe their season. The Trojans (12-18) started 2-2 before suspensions and an injury to senior point guard Jermaine Ruttley derailed them. They lost 14 of their next 15 before closing the regular season with a seven-game winning streak.
âItâs very frustrating,â said Ruttley, who finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists. âWe thought we could run the table once we got everyone back. Thatâs the big thing. We thought we had a chance. But nothing is handed to you and we saw it today.â
The Trojans committed 16 turnovers compared to only nine by Bardstown. The Tigers held a 17-8 edge in points off turnovers. North Hardin outrebounded Bardstown, 40-34, but the Tigers had 16 offensive rebounds.
âWe made too many mistakes with the basketball,â Bevars said. âItâs hard to beat anybody when you give up 17 points off of turnovers.â
North Hardin will definitely have a different look next season. The Trojans graduate seven players â Jauan Akins, Nathaniel Bell, Sam Coachman, Adam Hendrix, Darren Martin, Duwayne White and Ruttley.
âThis is very disappointing because we thought we could challenge for the region title,â said Hendrix, who posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. âWe thought Bardstown was our only real challenge, and if we could get past them, we had a good shot of going to Rupp (Arena).â
Bardstown (24-9) advances to play Marion County (20-11) at 8 p.m. Monday in the region semifinals. Marion County beat Green County, 50-49 in Thursdayâs nightcap. This is the second consecutive year the teams have met in the semifinals. Bardstown won last yearâs meeting, 59-31.
The Tigers were led by junior guard Devonte Grundy, who had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Drew Starks scored 11 points off the bench and senior guard Jordan Brewer added 10.
The first quarter saw two ties and four lead changes â the last one coming when Grundy put back a missed shot in the waning seconds to give Bardstown a 15-14 lead.
Trailing 20-18, Akins, who had 13 points and seven rebounds, drove in for a layup and was fouled with 3:57 left before halftime. He made the free throw to give the Trojans a 21-20 lead â their last of the game.
The Tigers closed the first half on an 8-2 run to take a 28-23 lead, and they stretch it to 39-29 less than 4 minutes into the second half.
âIt was one of those nights for us,â Ruttley said. âWe werenât ready to play. That was disappointing. But it was one of those nights where it wasnât there for us.â
Ruttley drained a 3-pointer and then White stole a pass and added a layup to pull the Trojans within 39-34 with 3:32 remaining.
Trailing 44-37, Hendrix scored four straight points, including a dunk. After a layup by Bardstown senior point guard Anthony Myrks, Akins made a 17-foot jumper and Hendrix had a layup as North Hardin cut its deficit to 46-45 with 5:04 remaining.
North Hardin had a chance to take the lead but turned the ball over, which led to two free throws by Brewer.
After Ruttley made 1-of-2 free throws, Grundy was fouled and made the first free throw. He missed the second, but the Tigers came up with the rebound and led to a layup by Starks for a 51-46 lead with 3:45 left. North Hardin didnât get closer than four the rest of the game.
âEvery time weâd get close theyâd make a run,â Hendrix said. âTheyâd get the ball in the paint for an easy shot or score off an offensive rebound. I donât know how that happens, but we didnât do anything about it.â
