Tonight the Panthers took on the Warren Central Dragons in a rematch of last year's opening round of the Regionals. This season both teams changed quite a bit from last year's dominate teams. The Dragons had to replace two star players while the Panthers were replacing six players who got the bulk of the minutes last season.
Despite the new looks for both teams, the Dragons repeated last year's results handing the Panthers a 59-44 loss.
The first half the Panthers and the Dragons exchanged points at a sluggish pace, both teams testing each other's defenses. The Panthers were determined to see the mighty Dragons fall and held the advantage, but only slightly early on.
The rotating door that is the Dragons starting five continued to rotate fresh bodies onto the court and started wearing down the Panthers. Even though the Dragons didn't have two star players, they had 6 or 7 really good players to compensate for their absence and it showed as the Dragons started to pull away.
It was 29-22 at the break and the Panthers were facing the third quarter who in the last few games have been a boon more than a bane.
Not tonight though, the third quarter came back to hurt the Panthers as the Dragons continued to pull away slowly but surely. It was 45-30 going into the final frame of the quarter. The Panthers made on final push when the Dragons tried to burn clock a little too early and cut it within 52-40 but could close it no further.
The Panthers would go into the offseason being sent there by the same team that sent them there last year the Dragons 59-44.
