Franklin County 50 vs.Madison Southern (at Alumni Coliseum, EKU) 48 11th Region
#12
RICHMOND — Looking back, it was easy for Madison Southern coach Shane Buttry to pick out a handful of moments that could have changed the outcome of Thursday’s showdown with Franklin County at the 11th Region Tournament.

Still, that didn’t make the loss any less painful.

“You can look at 50 possessions and if something would have happened differently, then we would have picked up that first regional win,” Buttry said. “It just didn’t.”

The Eagles (10-20) were in position to pick up the school’s first-ever 11th Region Tournament victory.

Southern had a 10-point lead in the third quarter, but the Flyers (17-15) rallied for a 50-48 win at McBrayer Arena. Franklin County’s Chris Roberts scored the game-winner with 19 seconds left.

Southern had two chances to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds, but both came up short.

“We played hard,” Buttry said. “I’m proud of them.”

A layup by Damien Harris with 4:24 left in the third put the Eagles up 35-25.

Franklin County answered right back. A basket by Ryan Timmons and two field goals by Eric Meyer got the Flyers within four points.

Franklin County cut the lead to two points (37-35), but Tyler Abshear hit two free throws to give Southern a 39-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

“They denied Tyler the ball and we just kind of panicked,” Buttry said. “We couldn’t get the ball up the floor. They played good defense. They are a lot quicker than us.”

The Eagles held on to the lead until Timmons gave the Flyers a 42-41 lead with 5:22 left. A three pointer by Southern’s Chris Roberts put his team back in front, 44-42.

Garrett Hamilton pulled Franklin County even at 48 with a basket with 1:41 left.

Southern had two chances to re-take the lead in closing moments, but a turnover and a missed three pointer gave the Flyers the ball with time running out.

Meyer drove the lane and dished to Roberts, who went up for an easy layup.

Harris rushed up the court and got off a contested shot in the lane that wouldn’t fall.

“He got bumped a little bit, but they aren’t going to call that at the end of the game,” Buttry said.

With five seconds left, Casey Tabor missed the front end of one-and-one free throw opportunity. Abshear got the rebound and tried to advance the ball up the court.

The Eagles had a timeout remaining, but they were unable to get off a shot before the buzzer.

“I felt like we could get it down the floor,” Buttry said. “That’s just the way it worked out.”

Franklin County jumped out to a 21-14 lead at the end of the first quarter, but then Southern’s defense started to take over.

The Eagles held the Flyers scoreless in the second quarter and went into halftime with a 24-21 lead. Franklin County was 0-for-11 in the second quarter and had five turnovers against Southern’s zone.

“We started in a 3-2 then went to a 2-3,” Buttry said. “They got hot there early in the game. They hit three threes in the first quarter.”

Abshear finished with 12 points for Southern. The junior also had six assists and six rebounds. Chris Roberts (Southern) had 11 points, Harris had eight points, while Rothermel and Brandon McGuire had six points each.

Timmons had 14 points and six assists. Franklin County’s Chris Roberts finished with 14 rebounds and 12 points.

Southern forced 15 turnovers and shot 40 percent from the field, including five-of-14 from three-point range.

Franklin County advances to Saturday’s semifinals to take on Scott County.
