ELIZABETHTOWN — Tenth-ranked Henderson County used an early 40-15 lead to hold on for a 78-68 win over No. 7 Elizabethtown in Saturday afternoon’s Duke’s Sporting Goods Valentine’s Shootout at John Hardin.

Forcing Elizabethtown into several early turnovers, the Lady Colonels (21-2) posted 31 first-quarter points en route to the win.

“We got off the bus ready to play. E-town’s guards are not as strong as Coach (Tim) Mudd would like them to be, and we got to them early,” Henderson County coach Jeff Haile said. “This was a big time win for us.”

The Lady Panthers did mount a 16-2 run to cut the halftime lead to 41-31, but the Lady Colonels pushed the lead back out to start the second half.

“The third quarter was really key for us. We got some baskets and some steals. We were able to get the lead back out,” Haile said.

Ellie Fruit, who hit four 3-pointers, led Henderson County with 23 points. Breya Cooper added 21 before fouling out. Brooke Tapp scored 15 points as the Lady Colonels won their 14th straight game.

Freshman Reaunna Cleaver topped Elizabethtown (20-5) with 21 points, while eighth-grader Erin Boley scored 18.

The Lady Colonels host Owensboro Catholic on Monday.
