A Jessie Clark Middle School eighth-grader who collapsed during baseball conditioning at Lafayette High School late Monday afternoon was in critical condition Tuesday morning at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

As of Tuesday morning, additional counselors were at the school to help students, said Fayette County schools spokeswoman Lisa Deffendall.

When the student collapsed, an athletic trainer administered CPR until emergency medical workers arrived, according to a statement issued by Deffendall on Monday.

Deffendall said middle school students are permitted to try out for the high school baseball team, but that tryouts for the season beginning Feb. 15 have not yet been held. Conditioning workouts like the one being held Monday afternoon are part of the preparation for tryouts.

Deffendall said that an athletic trainer provided through a contract with UK is present at all middle and high school athletic practices and games.

And she said all student-athletes are required to undergo a physical before participating in school sports.

I know the trainer that gave this kid CPR. Glad that her training kicked in. However, the town that I live it does not have trainers during practices and that always worried me when my son played football. Especially when he suffered a concussion during practice and no one had any clue on how to diagnosis so he just kept practicing.
