As a few of us called it, this was the Game of the Week for the 13th region. Barbourville maintained a 8-11 point lead most of the second half. SL's relentless pressure whittled the lead to under five with less than 2:30. The Tigers appeared to have survived until Matt Slavey nailed a three at the end of regulation to tie it. Barbourville looked exhausted in the overtime period and committed some crucial turnovers that allowed the Cards to build a lead. Still, the Tigers hit a big shot to cut SL's lead to two. The Tigers had one shot at the buzzer to win the game, but a midcourt desperate heave fell short.
The first look I've had at Bville. Typical well coached team. Seems like Dinky Phipps gets a strong enough team to win region every few years. The Tigers look a little thin, and I think they will tire against pressure. Still, one of the best Barbourville teams I've seen since, maybe 2006. Definitely one of the favorites to win the 13th.
SL is one or two "big" guys away from being a powerful team. As such, they really struggle on the boards and, at times, taking away penetration. Still, they don't quit, and can be quite dangerous at the 3. Slavey, Sanders and Baxter continue to impress. Most of the guys are Sophomores/Juniors. I think they will be one of the faves next season to win the region.

My prediction was way off. However, I still say SL is wayyy down in comparison to their tradition. But, Barbourville may not be as ahead of theirs as I once thought. Not taking anything away from SL. Congrats on the hard fought win.

I don't know about sophomores. I think South is basically a junior team. They had a great freshman group two years ago, along with Clay County and Harlan County.

Barbourville is looking pretty good and it appears that Lee Co will have a tough stretch over the next week!

Congrats Tigers!!

I think the core of the team are Juniors (Sanders, Hale, Slavey, Schaser and others). They do rotate a couple of Sophomores and Freshman Zac Baxter. Baxter is average double digits and is a good bet to be All State by his Junior or Senior year. Not entirely sure what South has waiting in the wings,as most of their more talented Freshman are playing up this year to Varsity or JV. I still think they make a strong run towards Rupp Arena next season. Still lacking a big man that can provide an inside game and hit the boards.

I don't think South makes a run to Rupp next season. Harlan County returns all but one starter on what most people say is the best team in the region this year.

Yeah, I knew that. Not sure why i said Congrats Tigers. My comment was in reference to the fact that Barbourville is looking very good this year and Lee Co has to play them in the Legacy Nissan Shootout.

Congrats to the Cardinals on the win!

Salvey, made a great shot at the end of regulation and Sanders, made a unbeliveable pass. Some how Sanders gets the ball to Salvey with a precission pass through defenders on the opposite side of floor and around the back board to hit Salvey with 1.3 left on the clock for a catch and shoot play at the end of regulation to tie the game. It's one of the best timed, placed passes and shots I've seen in basketball.

slavey , sanders, rader, mitchell, schaser, and jones have played together since the 6th.grade.this group has a ton of potential, they play great defense and love to run up and down the floor.mitchell and rader have super quickness that gave barbourville problems in second half.if they can get some production from the post position they will make a run in the tournament.
