Estill hung in there for awhile. But the SW press in the 3Q and Cody Epperson getting hot from 3 point land was to much for the engineeres.

There still young. They play a hard schedule for a team this young. East Jessamine, Boyle County, Southwestern, Holmes, Ryle, Buckhorn, Letcher Central, Knott Central, Hazard
Estill had there big man to return tonight after having to sit out the first 3 games of the season. I think he finished with 8 points and 10 Rebounds

Great game for the Warriors. First victory for Steve Wright at SWHS. The Warriors travel to Monticello tomorrow. The only bright spot for Estill County was Brandon Morris.

Ouch! Another tough loss for the Engineers! Good to see SW get in the win column. I would have been at this game tonight if I didn't have to work.
Congrats Warriors!

Somerset — Coming into the 2011-2012 high school boys’ basketball season, everyone knew that Southwestern had a plethora of talent.
In the Warriors’ home opener on Monday night at the Wigwam, that was evident as 11 diferent Southwestern players hit the scoring column in their 71-35 victory over the Estill County Engineers. The total-team effort allowed Steve Wright and company to move to a perfect 2-0 on the season.
The ‘Blue and Orange’ overcame a rough opening quarter with a pair of runs in the second half to down the visiting Engineers by a 36-point deficit.
Both squads, particularly Southwestern, had trouble finding the nets in the first period, as the score at the end of the first quarter was 9-6, in favor of the homestanding Warriors.
“We had some great shots early in the game, they just didn’t go in,” began Wright. “We struggled a little bit in the first quarter. Those shots had been going in for us in our previous scrimmages and games – they just didn’t go in tonight. We weren’t hitting our shots, so we went to our bench and put some other kids in.”
From that point on, the Warriors set the tempo with the help of their depth and fresh legs.
Southwestern outscored the Engineers 19 to 14 in the second stanza to grab a 28-20 halftime lead. Senior Justin Epperson paced the Warriors with five points in the quarter.
“We sped the tempo up and got going,” explained the first-year Southwestern hoops coach. “Everybody ended up contributing pretty well to the process; it just took us a while to get going. We probably could have started out faster, but that was probably my fault.”
The Warriors would use a pair of runs in the second half to pull away from Estill County.
Wright and company went on a 16-4 run in the third period to put this game out of reach. The Warriors outscored the Engineers 24 to 6 in the third frame to take a 52-26 advantage into the fourth and final quarter.
The Southwestern run kicked off with 10 unanswered points, which included a pair of baskets from senior Robby Lewis and sophomore Justin Edwards. The 10-0 run gave the Warriors a 38-20 lead over Estill County midway through the third period.
A basket from the Engineers’ Trevor Jenkins ended the 10-0 Warrior run. However, the Warriors would continue to roll, with back-to-back treys from Edwards and junior Justin Schulz.
Southwestern would use another 16-2 run in the third and fourth quarters to widen the gap. Late in the third, two consecutive treys from senior Cody Epperson gave the Warriors a 50-24 lead. A basket from freshman Isaiah Collier moved the run to eight unanswered points.
The run would continue into the fourth period, as senior Daulton Marlow came up with back-to-back scores, putting the Warriors out front, 56-20. A basket from the Engineers’ Josiah Muncie was the only blemish on the Southwestern run. A basket from Edwards and a pair of free-throws from Collier would conclude the run.
Lewis led all scorers with 14 points, while also coming up with a team-high 7 rebounds. Edwards chimed with 12 points, while Cody Epperson tallied 9 points and Justin Epperson had 8 points.
For Estill County, Trevor Jenkins led the way with 9 points. Brandon Morris scored 8 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds.
Wright knows his team is still trying to find their identity with a handful of key players coming in late from the postseason success of the football team.
“We’re still trying to find our identity obviously, having this only being our second game,” Wright told. “We had a great second half and turned things on. We started out slow and we have to make sure that it doesn’t become a trend.”
Southwestern (2-0) traveled to Monticello last night to face the Trojans in their 48th District opener. The Warriors will return to action on Friday evening, traveling to Monticello once again, this time to face Rodney Woods and the defending 12th Region champion Wayne County Cardinals.

Looks like Steve Wright walked into a great situation-nearly all the pieces back from last season, plus a couple of key additions. Pulaski Southwest has to be the favorite to win the 12th at this point.
