Going into the season, Mayfield was at 777 wins and this year they're 11-0. So add 11 more wins and theyre now at 788, still keeps them at 3rd in the state behind Male and Highlands.

Still impressive though

Where did Mayfield get the extra 2 wins? All the other lists show them as 775 when the year began.

According to Maxpreps, those in the National top 10 have the following records for the 2011 season so far:

Valdosta 6-1
Highlands 11-0
Male 5-6
Massillon 7-3 (season ended)
Mount Carmel 9-1
Canton McKinley 9-2
Mayfield 11-0
Little Rock Central 5-5
Hampton 8-2
Easton 8-2

KHSAA football record book has them at 777 going into this season. I'll take the state source.

Highlands High School has been in existence since 1888 and the school has been playing football since 1915.

Good stuff! Based on this my Cardinals have averaged more wins per year than any other team in KY

MayfieldCardinal Wrote:Good stuff! Based on this my Cardinals have averaged more wins per year than any other team in KY

How can that be? Just using the top ten list, I see that

Mayfield 777 wins / 92 seasons = 8.445652 wins per season
Highlands 813 wins / 96 seasons = 8.46875 wins per season

But then:

Trinity shows in this week's game notes that their overall record is 541-146-7, assuming that that is current, then at the end of 2010 they were 531-146-7. Their first season was in 1963 (I think) that means they have had 48 seasons so that is an average of 11.0625 wins per season.

John Hardin's record in their first 10 seasons, ending in 2010, was 100-32, making their average of exactly 10 wins per season is above both Mayfield and Highlands.

Then there may be some other school that has a good record also that I did not check. LCA, Beechwood and St X come to mind, but there are probably more.

So, you might want to reconsider your statement.

I had made an error in the John Hardin numbers but it would not let me edit. So the numbers are now correct.

You are correct in that Highlands has a 8.55 avg wins/year and Mayfield has a 8.53 wins per year average using the data but the data you are using is ending in 2010.

John Hardin is a new school as is LCA. So new that they have no place in this discussion. ST X is not close with 700 wins through 93 seasons using the 2010 end point you used. T is also a young school but they are averaging the most wins so far but only time will tell if they can maintain over a nearly a 90+ year period. Beechwood will not be that good as their success began in the 1980's. Prior to that they were just another team.

All seven are in the top 50 in the Nation as well

With the help of noted prep football historian Robert Dowcett, MaxPreps has compiled a list of the Top 50 winningest football programs in the nation.

It's a diverse list, featuring large schools and small schools, and it features schools from all across the nation. Teams from 20 different states made the list and the most come from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Seven Kentucky teams are in the Top 50, followed by six from Pennsylvania, four each from Texas and Oklahoma and three each from Tennessee, Ohio, Georgia and Arkansas.

All-time record totals do not include any games from the 2011 season

the list has male higher than hhs i guess maxpreps is slow b/c they got those wins back.

pretty cool to see so manny ky teams there!

Mayfield Cardinal,

I guess that I missed where you said "Of those with more than 90 seasons of football ..."

I did not see that in your comment, so I took it for what it said and made appropriate comments. As I read your comment above, you had left it open for all Kentucky schools, new or old.

Yes, Highlands and Mayfield are the leading schools when you consider only the ones that have a very long history of football. Both schools will have an improved average after 2011 as they both have 11 wins already this year with a maximum of 4 games left. If they both win championships, then Highlands will improve their lead, however, Mayfield can take the lead if they win two more games this year than Highlands wins.
