Basketball: Manual girls hit the boards to scrap past Marion County
By J.J. Hysell and Jason Frakes The Courier-Journal
Winning the battle of the boards proved vital to the Manual girls' basketball team in Saturday night's 56-45 victory over Marion County at the Raatz Fence Classic at Mercy Academy.
Manual (14-4), No. 1 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings, outrebounded the No. 8 Knights 43-36 and notched 17 second-chance points, snapping a five-game winning streak for Marion County (13-4). Manual has won two in a row and six of seven.
"At the beginning of the game we had two goals: to stop the drive and to rebound," said forward Mechael Guess, who led the Crimsons with 17 points. "We knew if we did that we could come out with a win."
When Manual's outside game faltered -- the Crimsons went 2 of 13 from the three-point line, including 0 for 8 in the first half -- it successfully went inside, and that's where Guess excelled.
"She makes our break work," coach Stacy Pendleton said. "She makes opposing post players really run the floor, thus they can't rebound as hard on the offensive glass."
Despite a smothering Marion County defense, Guess keyed two runs by Manual in the opening quarter.
With the Crimsons ahead 6-5, Guess made a layup and was fouled. She missed the free throw, but Nicole Lauterbach grabbed the rebound, and Guess followed with another basket to extend the lead to 10-5.
The Knights cut the deficit to 12-9 thanks to a basket and two free throws from guard Makayla Epps. Leasia Wright answered with a layup at the other end that made it 14-9.
When the Knights got close again -- they cut the gap to 14-11 behind free throws from Epps -- Guess responded. Wright dished inside to Guess, who scored and was fouled. The senior sank the free throw to make it 17-11.
That's when Manual took control, as Marion County got no closer than eight points the rest of the game.
"The first quarter I knew we had to get on them quick," Guess said.
Epps led the Knights with 18 points but was the only player in double digits. The Crimsons held guard Bre Elder to six, 10 below her average.
"We did a lot of standing around," Marion County coach Trent Milby said. "We didn't attack. We didn't play a good game at all. We made some crazy fouls and got into some foul trouble in the first half. We need to focus and play harder."
Manual will play at Male tonight. Marion County next plays in the Louisville Invitational Tournament at Bellarmine on Friday.
