Stephen Lickert named Campbell County head-coach
#1
The Holmes head coach will be taking his outstanding skills to Campbell County for the coming season. His background with Highlands and his work with the youth league there will be perfect for strengthening the CCYFL. And the job that he did with Holmes should fit nicely with the Camels.

Campbell County has just finished replacing longstanding coaches for the Big three with coaches outside of the school; Aric Russell - Basketball (Newport) and Scott Schweitzer - Baseball (Brossart)

Congrats to both Coach Lickert and the Camels. It'd be nice if he can be the one to turn Campbell County's sleeping giant into a consistent winner.

Newly-hired Campbell County football coach Stephen Lickert took some time this evening to answer a few questions:

Q: What made you interested in the job?

A: They have a lot of kids. Their freshmen teams are always really good. Troy Styer set a solid foundation. It’s an area that seems to be growing. It’s a chance to be at a big school and have a lot of kids.

Q: When you think of your four years at Holmes, what will you remember most?

A: I’ll think of watching kids grow into men and starting to believe in themselves and learning what it takes to be really successful. I’ll think of them learning how to do things right. We’re developing the whole person. That’s what I’ll remember the most. Hopefully I helped them develop as people.

Q: What do you think about stepping up into the biggest classification in the state?

A: I have nothing but respect for all the 6A programs in the area and all the 6A coaches. I feel like we have the tools to be really, really successful.

Q: Have you started forming a staff yet?

A: I’ll meet with the guys who are out there now. If they share my vision, then I’ll bring them on. Really, it’s open. I have guys I’ve coached with before who are interested. I think we’ll put together a great staff.

Q: People thought this thing was a done deal a long time ago. I know that wasn’t the case. Talk about the hiring process.

A: For me, it was basically a lot of talking to people I really respect and going out there and seeing what’s going on – with the community and with the new facility. That all factored in. I want to be somewhere where I can be for a long time and build a strong program. Everyone out there is execited about being successful in football. That’s the kind of place I want to be.

Q: You mentioned the facilities. How big of a role did that play?

A: It’s definitely big. The facility creates a whole new environment they haven’t had since they moved to the new school. They’ll have an on-campus stadium that kids can just walk right out of the school and go to. That gets people excited. I couldn’t pass it up.

I know this became official today, but alot of people saw this happening awhile back. Holmes now has Highlands and CovCath in their district, the facilities are above average, but nothing compared to what Campbell is getting, the Camel football program is getting stronger and stronger. This was bound to happen.

I wonder who Holmes will hire? They could stay locally, but Ron Maderick has contacts everywhere.

^ Lickert became an option for the Camels just before the Camels played their last game with GRC. But the rumors of Lickert moving on came at the beginning of the season where everyone thought he was a lock for Boone County. He still has his hands full with a program that needs fundamental skills, but from all that I have heard, he is the guy who can do it.

Good hire by Campbell Co. Coach Lickert has had success everywhere he's been. Each time stepping up a class (Dayton, Holmes, now CCHS).
Give him time and he should bring a winner to Camel Land

Anytime you hire a coach with Highlands roots, it's an upgrade.

Isn't that what they said about Deaton down at Dayton?

He was an upgrade. He just couldn't get guys who weren't willing to work to work hard and care. IMO Dayton will never improve.

Would you rather have a guy who's been in a winning program and knows how to win? Or would you rather have a guy who's been in a program where 6 and 4 is a great season?

I think Coach Lickert can have success IF he stays longer than 3 years and not keep looking for "greener" pastures

^ IF is key. Talked to many of the boys last night, and they really enjoyed him when he came out and addressed them at school. They really like his "upbeat" attitude. As NKY can likely attest to from the County, "upbeat" can sour quickly if the administration does not show him full support.

It can go south quickly. But I think he has alot of positives going in.
