GOODY, Ky. - The Lady Pirates of Belfry felt this game was owed to them.
Their payday came on Monday night.
The Lady Pirates avenged a 55-45 season-opening loss to Johnson Central with a 48-36 win over the Lady Eagles at the BHS gymnasium.
âOur kids felt as if they (Johnson Central) took one from us earlier in the year,â BHS coach Mark Gannon said. âWe wanted to get this one back, and we did.â
The win didn't come easy.
Belfry's defense served as its best offensive weapon in the second half. The Lady Pirates held JC to a 3-of-21 performance from the field in the second half.
The Lady Eagles hit just 11-of-45 tries (24 percent) for the game.
âOur defense created some turnovers, and it seemed as if we snowballed from there,â Gannon added.
Belfry snapped a 29-all tie at the end of the third quarter with a three-point basket by senior Brooke Stanley to hand the Lady Bucs their first lead of the second half at 32-29.
Later in the quarter, Belfry scored 10 unanswered points - and scored on three consecutive JC turnovers - to expand its margin to 12 at 45-37 on a Amanda Moon layup with 4:02 left in the game.
The Lady Bucs never looked back.
âThis was a total team effort,â Gannon continued.
