Kentucky's winningest girls' hoops coach resigns
#1
Howard Beth, the winningest girls' basketball coach in Kentucky high school history, has announced his resignation after 30 seasons at Marshall County but said he might not be finished coaching.

The 61-year-old Beth said the time was right to step down but noted that his son, Aaron, likely would apply for the job and that he might be interested in serving as an assistant coach. Aaron Beth has been an assistant coach under his father the past five seasons.

“I'd still be interested in coaching as long as I don't have to worry about making every decision,” said Howard Beth, adding that he would consider other schools if his son doesn't get the Marshall County job.

Beth posted a 793-150 record and led the Lady Marshals to a state-record 19 trips to the Sweet 16, including 11 straight from 1981-91. Marshall County won state titles in 1982 and '84.

Beth led the school to Louisville Invitational Tournament titles in 1984 and '85 and was named The Courier-Journal's Coach of the Year from 1984-86.

He was inducted into the KHSAA Hall of Fame in 1994.

“We had an awful lot of good kids, and Marshall County has been super nice to me,” Beth said. “The wins really don't mean as much as thinking back to all the people you associated with and all the friends you made. The kids almost become your family after you're with them for four years.”

Marshall County principal Amy Waggoner said in a news release that the school has “lost a part of its heritage.”

Perry County Central coach Randy Napier ranks second on Kentucky's all-time wins list for girls' basketball with a record of 699-204.
