BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — His team heavily favored to win Friday's Class 6-A semifinal, St. Xavier High School football coach Mike Glaser chose to keep things simple on offense.

And simple was good enough.
Jermiah Neal had three short touchdown runs and Brian Buehner passed for 209 yards — most coming on basic out routes to Austin Jones — as the Tigers knocked off host Greenwood 28-6.
“We wanted to play it close to the vest,” Glaser said of an offense that still produced 385 yards. “Our goal was to get to next week, not to win by anything more than one point. We're tickled to be back in the championship game.”
The Tigers (13-1) — No. 1 in The Courier-Journal's Litkenhous Ratings — will get a rematch with No. 4 Trinity in next Saturday's 6-A championship game at Western Kentucky University. St. X beat Trinity 32-7 this season but has been eliminated from the playoffs by the Shamrocks three of the past four seasons.
Trinity (10-4) beat Scott County 42-13 in Friday's other 6-A semifinal.
“It's awesome,” Buehner said of the chance to play Trinity again. “We've worked hard for this all year. It's a great opportunity.”
Buehner completed 17 of 24 passes and also rushed for a touchdown. The Tigers were held to 176 yards on 50 rushing attempts (3.5 yards per carry) as Greenwood (10-4) dared St. X to throw the ball.
“They were in that 4-4 defense and put everybody in the box and did a good job stopping our run,” Buehner said. “We were able to spread it out on the outside of the hashes to our receivers.”
Jones was the benefactor, finishing with 10 catches for 133 yards.
Still, two first-half turnovers kept the game tight as the Tigers led just 14-0 at halftime. The Gators then made a game of it midway through the third quarter as Hunter Neveras broke loose for a 53-yard run to the Tigers' 9-yard line. One play later quarterback Tyler Downing carried for a 9-yard TD to make it 14-6 at the 5:28 mark.
The extra-point attempt was blocked.
After a St. X punt, Greenwood had a chance to pull even. But on third down William Warren intercepted a Downing pass to give the Tigers the ball with 9:25 left in the game.
St. X ate up clock from there, and Buehner finally scored on a 1-yard plunge to make it 21-6 with 4:11 left. Neal added his third TD run – a 6-yarder – at the 1:44 mark.
“If we could stop their run game and make them throw, we felt like we had a chance,” said Greenwood coach Mark Nelson, whose team was playing in its first state semifinal. “But they made some plays.”
Lamont McMurry led the St. X ground game with 72 yards on 12 carries. Jeonta Hayden added 44 yards on eight attempts, and Neal had 43 yards on 10 runs.
