The motto on the T-shirts of the Campbell County High School girls' basketball team this year is "Step it Up."
This year's Camel team has to step up into their roles, head coach Ed Cravens said.
The Camels must replace several seniors and two starters in Paige Bowling and Katie Kitchen, both playing hoops this fall for Thomas More College.
"I think we have some potential to be a nice team," Cravens said. "Our young kids are very athletic, but we have little varsity experience coming back. They're good kids and talented, they just don't have that same level of competition yet."
The Camels return three starters in Brianna Peters, Anne Marie Dumaine and Taylor Griffin as they look to build on last year's 21-7 season which ended in the 10th Region semifinals. Campbell won the 37th District Tournament along the way.
Cravens, entering his 13th season as head coach, said the team will look to Peters, a 6-foot-1 senior center, to anchor the post. Peters averaged 11.2 points a game last season and shot 48 percent from the field. She also posted 7.3 rebounds a contest.
"I think she's very strong and has some potential to play at the next level," Cravens said. "She's as solid as can be inside."
Dumaine, a 5-8 senior guard, will be the leader from the outside. She averaged 5.7 points per game.
"We have a lot of work to do before we're ready because we're a new team," Dumaine said. "We have the potential, we just have to work at it."
Griffin, a junior, returns at point guard but may be out at the beginning of the season with a wrist injury. She posted five points a contest.
Cravens said he will rely on youth to step up. The Camel roster has three seniors, three juniors, seven sophomores and two freshmen.
The seniors are ready to take on new leadership roles.
"He's harder on us because he expects more from us," Dumaine said. "The pressure will make us better because we know the team is counting on us. It will be great."
Said Peters: "We have a lot of athleticism. We just have to learn to play together."
The Camels start the season at home against Dayton Nov. 30.

She'll be limited the first month of the season, making the contributions of Peters (11.2 ppg, 7.3 rpg) and Dumaine (5.7 ppg) more important. "The key for us is guard play and post play together, and keeping BP (Peters) out of foul trouble," Cravens said. Peters gives the Camels a skilled player with size to go up against Scott's Lauren Tibbs, something no other district team possesses.
