The Simon Kenton football team probably didn’t need any reminders this week about what a No. 4 seed can do in the Kentucky state football playoffs. Just in case, the coaching staff mentioned a familiar case study early and often this week.
“Every day we talked to them about remembering last year’s situation,” said Simon Kenton coach Jeff Marksberry.
“We were a No. 4 seed, playing on the road against a team we weren’t supposed to beat. … You’ve got to keep eyes in the back of your head, and not look forward too much either.”

The Pioneers, who snuck into last year’s playoffs, then upset top seed Lafayette in route to the Class 6A state finals, started this year’s postseason as a No. 1 seed and advanced with a dominant first-round victory.
They beat Louisville Butler 49-7 in the first home playoff game in Simon Kenton football history.
Simon Kenton senior running back Miles Simpson, one of the leading candidates for Kentucky’s Mr. Football award, rushed 25 times for 217 yards and four touchdowns.
“I think they wore down a little bit,” Marksberry said. “It’s nice to have a team like ours where we can just keep pounding Miles at people. Eventually, that wears teams down.”
Butler hung around early, stuffing the Pioneers on three straight plays inside the 2-yard line on their second possession. Then, on fourth-and-goal from the 1, Chad Lawrence rolled out and hit D.J. Rabe for a touchdown.
“We were trying to pound it in on them and they kept stuffing it,” Lawrence said. “I thought we were going to run a quarterback sneak, but we went with that. The ball kind of slipped out of my hand a little bit, but it turned out all right. It was a good play and a good call.”
After the Bears came back to tie the score 7-7, the Pioneers scored on a 60-yard run from Simpson. He struck again with 14.7 seconds remaining in the first half on a 1-yard run, giving the Pioneers a 21-7 halftime lead.
