Bishop Brossart 21 Walton-Verona 15
#1
Final today in Walton.

Also this is Brossart first district win in school history. They came ready to play and if they can beat Dayton later in the year they will make the playoffs for the first time. What a turn around season the Mustangs have had.

Chris Bowman had a big game for the Mustangs with 209 yards rushing against Walton. This was a Big district win in this historic season for Brossart.

Bowman is a beast. They just pounded the ball with him and it worked out for them.

Awesome job by the Stangs

The Bishop Brossart football team has persevered through growing pains, the limitations of a 34-player roster, a flu virus, a two-day practice week because of a rescheduled contest and a three-game losing streak this season.

The news was better for the Mustangs on Saturday.

They won their first-ever Class A district game, beating host Walton-Verona 21-15, and senior Chris Bowman continued to etch his name as one of the Mustangs’ early greats with another standout two-way performance.

"It’s a big day for us," Brossart head coach Matt Reinhart said. "We’ve never won a district game, and it’s one of the things we’ve been talking about as we build this."

Bowman bulled his way to a career-high 212 rushing yards on 37 carries, eclipsing his previous high of 160 yards Sept. 5 against Bracken County.

Bowman scored all three Brossart touchdowns Saturday on runs of 10, 19 and 12 yards, propelling the Mustangs (4-3) to their first win since defeating Jenkins on Sept. 12.

Bowman added nine tackles on defense against Walton from his right end position, and forced the Bearcats’ offense to play on one side of the field – not Bowman’s.

"He’s one of the best football players I’ve ever coached," Reinhart said of Bowman. "He’s basically the second coming of Tony Woeste, because he’s so tough and he does so many things on the football field."

The Brossart program, in its fourth season overall and third as a district-eligible team, has had two great players in its brief history, according to Reinhart – Woeste, a 2008 graduate, and Bowman.

"Chris is a throwback player, and he plays angry," Reinhart said. "He’s a great kid. I mean, awesome. But when he gets on the football field, he’s angry. And he wants his way."

After an inconsistent first quarter, the Bearcats seemed to find a successful formula in the second quarter when they began running many of their plays either straight up the middle or away from Bowman.

Walton scored its first touchdown in three weeks on Andrew Baumgartner’s 8-yard second-quarter run, whittling Brossart’s lead to 14-7, the score at halftime.

The Bearcats didn’t put together another sustained drive until their final possession late in the fourth quarter, a 12-play series capped by Nolan Daugherty’s 3-yard touchdown pass to receiver Trent Eschan.

Meanwhile, Bowman was wrapping up Walton runners and driving them to the turf on defense, and bashing into the Bearcats’ line and breaking tackles on offense.

He carried nine times on Brossart’s final scoring drive, a mammoth 15-play, 81-yard series during which the Mustangs gave the ball to Bowman on five of the final six plays. Bowman’s 12-yard run scoring scamper and Ryan Morrison’s extra-point kick gave Brossart a 21-7 lead with 2:15 to play.

"He’s a really good player," Brossart fullback Timothy Butts said of Bowman. "He’s a big part of our offense and one of the main guys on defense. He was great today, and it means a lot to finally get a district win after not getting one the first three years."

Bowman said he’s just trying to do his best as one of the program’s original building blocks.

"It feels pretty good to be a part of a big win," Bowman said. "It’s like winning our first game."

Bowman was there for the first Brossart football game in 2006, and so was Butts.

"We’ve come so far since then," coach Reinhart said. "Today, we were able to play our brand of football, which is ground and pound. Our line and our runners, especially Chris Bowman, allowed us to do that."

Walton’s record dropped to 1-6. The Bearcats, celebrating their homecoming Saturday, have lost five straight since winning their opener.

After this win could the Mustangs make the playoffs? What does it take for the Mustangs to play a game in November?

How many teams in their District. A win over Walton puts them over them. I think Brossart is in unless there are ties in the District.

6 teams in district. Brossart has two teams left (Beechwood and Dayton).
Beechwood and Bellevue seems to be locks with Ludlow in the third spot. Guess it will come down to the Dayton game for Brossart

You are correct Brossart needs to beat Dayton in a few weeks to go and they have a good chance of doing that. This week of course they play Beechwood but the big game is after this week.
