Fans attending a rare Monday night high school football game were greeted by the vocal stylings of Hank Williams Jr. blasting through the speakers of Ludlowâs Rigney Stadium.
Are you ready for some football?
The Panthers, as has been the case this season, werenât â at least not initially. It just took them a little time to get going.
Ludlow, which lost its first two games of the season, extended its winning streak to three games with a 35-14 homecoming victory over Bishop Brossart. The Panthers did it by scoring 35 unanswered points.
âFor some reason we canât get that intensity up enough to get going,â said Ludlow coach Rick Hornsby. âItâs not that theyâre not trying. I donât know what it is. Weâre trying to figure it out. But as long as we win the second half like weâre doing, Iâll take it.â
Heading into the game, Ludlow had been outscored 33-6 in the first quarter. It got off to a similar start Monday.
Brossart, which closed school last week due to a flu breakout (the game was moved from Friday to Monday as a result), jumped out to a 14-0 lead. In the gameâs first eight minutes, it scored on a 16-yard touchdown run from Michael Whitford and a 25-yard touchdown pass from Jesse Orth to John Schack. The Mustangs, who didnât practice at all last week, also forced a three-and-out and blocked a punt.
â(Not practicing) killed us,â said Brossart coach Matt Reinhart. âThatâs a game that we couldâve easily won. We couldâve beat them. We came out the first quarter and played great. After that, we were done. ⦠We didnât have any juice after the first quarter.â
Whatever the reason, Ludlow dominated the remainder of the game.
Chris Yates got things going with an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. On the Panthersâ next possession, quarterback Zach Stegemoller scrambled 94 yards up the Ludlow sideline for another score.
âIt was supposed to be a (pass) to my tight end,â Stegemoller said. âI looked up and had a linebacker coming at me, so I just tried to make something happen. My receiver, Chris Yates, made a heck of a block for me and I just went down the sideline.â
The extra point left the game tied heading into halftime. Stegemoller said once in the locker room, the Panthers received a stirring speech from senior captains Drew Rice, Dylan Meyer and Justin Carlotta.
âThey asked us how bad we wanted this,â he said. âWe answered it. We wanted it bad.â
Ludlow scored on three of its first four second-half possessions. Stegemoller threw a pair of touchdown passes â one to Yates and another to Garrett Hall â and Jordan Webster provided the gameâs final touchdown on an 8-yard run.
Ludlow outgained B rossart 300 yards to 246. Jacob Ashcraft paced Ludlow with 103 yards on 15 carries. Rice led the defense with 23 tackles. Webster and Jake Kleir each picked off a pass.
The victory made Ludlow 1-0 in Northern Kentuckyâs Class 1A district heading into Fridayâs game at Dayton.
âDayton scares me to death,â Hornsby said. âTheyâre huge. ⦠Thatâs a very important game for us. Unfortunately we have to play Friday. This is kind of a screwed up week for us. But if we get past Dayton, I think weâre in decent shape in the playoff picture. ⦠(Monday night) was a neat atmosphere, but I wouldnât want to do it year-in and year-out.â

then the monkey jumped on their back. Adrenaline for not playing a game for 16 days will wear off and the reality of being sick kicks in. Seems like the Brossart kids hit the wall. May have been the after affects of so many of them being sick(at one point half the players). Just a thought.
