There were two important running totals being monitored by Highlands basketball coaches during the Bluebirds' first-round victory on Tuesday against Notre Dame Academy at the Ninth Region girls' basketball tournament.
Highlands came out ahead in both tallies.
The Bluebirds defeated Notre Dame 52-43. And they outrebounded the Pandas 48-29, while advancing to Friday's 8 p.m. regional semifinal against Boone County at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
Katie Allen led Highlands, ranked No. 2 in the Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, with 12 points.
Allen's 3-pointer with 1:43 to play, Highlands' first basket from the field in nearly seven minutes, cut one of the few Notre Dame leads to one just seconds before the Bluebirds (25-5) took the lead for good against the Pandas, ranked fifth.
But the real heroes for Bluebirds coach Jaime Richey were rebounding leaders Bekah Towles, who had a game-high 14, and Sam Messmer, who pulled down eight rebounds and put Highlands ahead to stay, 44-43, with a pair of free throws with 1:39 to go.
Those two players took to heart Richey's pre-game request to win the rebounding war.
"I told the girls every possession counts," Richey said.
The coach also broke down film of Highlands' demoralizing 36th District tournament final loss to Newport Central Catholic and used it as a learning tool during a Saturday team meeting.
Richey was dismayed with both shooting and rebounding against NewCath. But when it came time to choose which issue she would zero in on during two practice days leading up to Tuesday's game against the Pandas (20-12), Richey chose rebounding............
