Little guy hits biggest shot
Bluebirds' 135-pound guard unfazed, rallies team late

The baby-faced, little guy was pushed around, fouled hard, injured and taunted

And none of it seemed to faze Zach Lother, Highlands' 5-foot-8, 135-pound junior point guard.

Lother scored a team-high 19 points and helped his teammates maintain their composure down the stretch as Highlands defeated Scott 70-63 in a bruising matchup between two of Northern Kentucky's top teams Monday night in Fort Thomas.

"Perfect game for the last week of the (regular) season," said Highlands coach Willie Schlarman, whose team is ranked No. 3 in The Enquirer Northern Kentucky coaches' poll, one spot ahead of Scott. "That's what's coming at us next week."

And the senior-less Highlands team believes it has the perfect guy to lead them into the postseason.

Both Schlarman and Scott coach Brad Carr agreed that Lother's 28-foot 3-pointer with five seconds remaining in the third quarter was the turning point in the game.

That cut Highlands' deficit to 43-42 entering the fourth quarter, and helped start an 11-0 run for the Bluebirds.

"I've seen him make those in practice all the time, but never in a game," Schlarman said. "The little guy was the difference-maker."

Highlands' run completely frazzled the Eagles, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Carr was whistled for a technical foul during a timeout with 6:51 remaining in the game. Lother converted both free throws to cap the run, giving Highlands a 50-43 advantage.

"The referees didn't lose the game for us," Carr said. "We lost the game by losing our composure, and that starts at the top with me. (Highlands) handled the adversity better than we did."

Credit Lother for leading that charge. As Lother went in for a layup with 4:50 remaining, he was slammed into the padded wall by Scott point guard Kellen Smith........
