Shelby Valley 55 - Newport Central Catholic 36

Thoughts...

Congrats SV

Shelby Valley gives up 14 turnovers, they're going to have to cut that down tomorrow or Elliott is going to make it an ugly game.
#4
Well it was a ugly game for SV, but they got the win. They need to improve at the free throw line and cut down on turnovers. Good luck against Elliot!
#5
Ugly game, but in true Kentucky basketball fashion, we're complaining about a 19 point win over a good team.

Way to go Wildcats. Congrats!

Congrats to Elisha Justice for making his 1000th point during this game.

great win shelby valley

Well I think its a good sign for mountain basketball when you hand NCC their worst loss of the season and didn't play near your potential.

Very true. Valley held NCC to their second lowest point total of the season.

Very true. SV gets a 19-point win in tournament play less than 24 hours after giving a defensive seminar to Henry County on a neutral floor and people complain. Amazing.

And yes, congrats to Elisha Justice!

Newport was a well discilpined team, SV did not play as all hoped but they still found a way to win by 19. Great job valley, Congrats Justice!

Shelby Valley showing why they are atop their region. Good win.
Good luck against Elliot Co. tommorrow

Any stats for the game?

Good win for SV. I thought it would actually be a little closer, more like a 10-12 point margin, so this is better than I expected. Even though they still committed too many turnovers, and their foul shooting has been atrocious, their defense is carrying them so far this tournament.

Congrats on picking up a solid win.

Glad to see SV win, good game out of Taylor and EJ this game did seem a little closer than 19 with just a couple minutes to go though. SV will definitely have to rebound better, cut down on turnovers while shooting alot better from the foul line to beat EC.Smile

I have to agree with you on this one. What is your predictions on the score?I think SV will have to play alot better to beat EC. If valley will play to there potential EC is beat. Go big blue.:flame:

Sv Needs To Improve Offensively, Rebounding, cutting Down On Turnovers, Shot Selection, Go Wildcats!!
#17
After seeing Shelby Valley play for the 1st time, they need to play much better or they will get beat 20+ tomorrow vs EC. To many unforced turnovers, to many bad shots, better play better defense also. Although there big guy could give EC some problems if Knipp is not more aggressive inside!!

Great win by the wildcats. I can not wait for tomorrows game.

RICHMOND - The lower half of this year's Touchstone Energy All "A" Classic bracket featured a possible dream matchup. From the start of the event, Elliott County and Shelby Valley - both in the state computer rankings' top 10 - seemed to be on a collision course.

As it turns out, Newport Central Catholic was a mere speed bump on the road to that matchup.

The Thoroughbreds slowed Shelby Valley slightly but never came close to stopping the Wildcats in a 55-36 quarterfinal loss Saturday at McBrayer Arena.

Shelby Valley, eighth in the state, and top-ranked Elliott County will play in today's semifinals.

NewCath coach Grant Brannen, an All "A" veteran, said the event is experiencing a banner year.

"There are a lot of teams down here who are going to be playing in the (Sweet Sixteen) this year," he said. "That's good for us. We like playing against good competition."

NewCath had its hands full from the start Saturday. The Thoroughbreds never led and trailed 29-19 at halftime.

The Wildcats, who have held teams to 37 points or fewer in four of their past five games, came up with 17 steals and caused 20 turnovers. Their full-court trap, led by Elisha Justice and Logan Bryant, repeatedly led to easy baskets.

"It was different than up in the Ninth Region. They had guys flying every which way," said NewCath guard Jeramie Connor. "Most teams in our region don't come up and press you as hard as they did."

Connor, who scored a game-high 27 points in the Thoroughbreds' opening-round victory over Danville, led NewCath with nine points on 3-of-7 shooting.

Shelby Valley coach Jason Booher said his team's half-court defensive plan focused on limiting Connor's open looks.

"Our guards did a great job of getting up there and pressuring, poking the ball and tipping it," Booher said.
