Hurricane Rita
#1
Authorities in Texas and along the storm-shattered coast of Louisiana braced Wednesday for Hurricane Rita, as the powerful Category 4 (135 mph winds) storm picked up strength in the Gulf of Mexico.
The latest extended forecast from the National Hurricane Center has Rita gathering strength before the eye makes landfall near Galveston, Texas, late Friday or early Saturday, the center said. However, the center did not rule out possible hits on Louisiana or northern Mexico.
In Galveston, a barrier-island city of 60,000 flattened by a hurricane in 1900, residents were preparing to leave. About 80 city buses will be at the city's Island Community Center Wednesday morning to evacuate Galveston residents who do not have transportation. Many people lined up to make sure they had a ride, all carrying the one bag of belongings they were allowed. Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas declared a state of emergency Tuesday night and ordered a mandatory evacuation.

Wow!! This is not what our country needs right now.
#3
yeah i seen today that iwas a cat4 all we can do now is pray
#4
Its now a Category 5...with winds of 165 miles an hour and it is over 300 miles wide......
#5
News said its worse than katrina.....This is horrible
#6
With it so far from land, it can only get worse. I wouldn't be surprised to see it top 200+ MPH winds. Forecasters think it will hit cooler waters before reaching landfall, but I don't see that happening. The Gulf is like a hot water tank feeding fuel for the fire.
#7
yeap i agree
#8
wtf is goin on with this crazy weather?!?!?!

I mean it was like 3 Cat 5s over a hell of a long period of time and now 2 in a month! I wish eveyone there the best...and I'm sure more will leave this time knowing what damage it can cause.
#9
WEATEHR CHANNEL said they expected at least 2 more major hurricanes before the hurricane season is over....Doesnt sound good for folks down south or along east coast
#10
Here's something else to think about....

the first one hit a bunch of refineries right? Well those are still being repaired causing gas prices to increase.

Now this one is projected to hit Texas, where I remind you are most of the refineries in the gulf coast that are still in opperation. Those go down and....

Sad That sucks

13% of our oil/gas comes from the refineries there.
10 of them in Houston alone.
HIGH gas prices.
But I worry more about the people and hope that everything works out for the best. This worries me. Just keep it in your thoughts and prayers.
#14
yeah really

do you guys think it would be a bad idea to start drillin in alaska now?

even though i havent got a lisence yet, I dont think its a bad idea, and it could really be helpful especially w/ all the gas prices goin up alot anyways...(first iraq, then hurricanes) if you know what i mean
#15
It's not the oil supply gut turning the oil into gas.
#16
All of this is only going to get worse.....
#17
I'm tired of hearing about these freaking hurricanes, that's all they talk about on the news and now it's on here, you can't escape it. How are we to be shiny, happy, people if all we hear is "death, death, death, hurricanes, hurricanes, hurricanes."?
#18
That's what's going on right now....what you want to be on the news?
#19
Last time I checked our soldiers were still fighting in Iraq. Anything.
#20
The Televison stations, MSNBC, FoxNews, CNN, etc. care only about one thing and that is their ratings. The death and destruction gets them good ratings because people want to watch it...kinda like rubbernecks when you come up on a car accident on the highway. I wish these things didn't happen but I do like to watch them on the cable news channels.
#21
the last i heard is rita is going to be cat 5 before it hits
#22
They aren't sure if it's going to be a CAT 5 or not. It's still quite a distance before landfall and it didn't hit CAT 5 until after it passed Florida. It could quite possibly die down to a 3 before it takes land.

I think it's a good thing to have the hurricane coverage all over the news. It's a good way to let the people in the area know as a warning to get out of the area. Believe it or not, they're actually people in Houston and Louisiana that haven't heard it was coming yet. Hopefully, word will get out to them.

Now 175 MPH winds. The pressyre dropped down to 897 millibars making it the 3rd largest hurricane ever in the Atlantic Basin.
