LOS ANGELES, May 16 /PRNewswire/ -- At a press conference held in Los Angeles, California, today, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) revealed the outline of its PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3) computer entertainment system, incorporating the world's most advanced Cell processor with super computer like power. Prototypes of PS3 will also be showcased at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the world's largest interactive entertainment exhibition held in Los Angeles, from May 18th to 20th.
PS3 combines state-of-the-art technologies featuring Cell, a processor jointly developed by IBM, Sony Group and Toshiba Corporation, graphics processor (RSX) co-developed by NVIDIA Corporation and SCEI, and XDR memory developed by Rambus Inc. It also adopts BD-ROM (Blu-ray Disc ROM) with maximum storage capacity of 54 GB (dual layer), enabling delivery of entertainment content in full high-definition (HD) quality, under a secure environment made possible through the most advanced copyright protection technology. To match the accelerating convergence of digital consumer electronics and computer technology, PS3 supports high quality display in resolution of 1080p(*) as standard, which is far superior to 720p/1080i.

With an overwhelming computing power of 2 teraflops, entirely new graphical expressions that have never been seen before will become possible. In games, not only will movement of characters and objects be far more refined and realistic, but landscapes and virtual worlds can also be rendered in real- time, thereby elevating the freedom of graphics expression to levels not experienced in the past. Gamers will literally be able to dive into the realistic world seen in large screen movies and experience the excitement in real-time.

I understand all of it, and it's going to be a great system. Breaking news though, I don't see, I've seen the specs a week ago, all but the BD-ROM space, I thought it was only 27gb, but the dual-layered is probably the cause.

Compared to the games now,
BD-ROM (PS3) - 27 to 54 GB
DVD-ROM (PS2, XBOX) - 4.4 GB
UMD (mini-dvd) PSP - 1.8 GB
GameCube disks (mini-dvd?) 1.4 GB

The game's resources are going to skyrocket, with exponentionally times bigger game areas. If anyone here has pplayed San Andreas, they know how big the game areas are. They can take about 20 minutes or so to go all the way across. Now, with the PS3 and XBOX-360 technology, we could be talking a nation, instead of a state. GTA: America isn't that far off, or at least GTA: Eastern America. 8)

Not only the sheer size of the game-area, but the other resources, but quality as well. Textures are going to be super-detailed, and sony showed this at E3 as well...

One of the more impressive aspects of the Sony press conference was the appearance of a so-called Final Fantasy VII "Technical Demo for PS3," a re-creation of the original CGI intro for Final Fantasy VII rerendered in real-time for the PS3 hardware. The power of the PS3 is immediately apparent, as the low-poly CGI of the original game is replaced with some impressively modeled characters (Aeris actually looks recognizably human now). After pulling back to reveal Midgar in all its plume-of-smoke glory, the sequence cuts back to the train from which Cloud first appeared in FFVII. Instead of being up about 100 polygons with big blocks for hands, though, Cloud here appears to be almost as realistically rendered as he is in the FFVII: Advent Children all-CGI movie.

At the outset, the tech demo features a profile of Aeris, doing her flower-selling thing on the streets of Midgar. As the camera pulls back, we see the actual cars on the streets, faithfully modeled and bouncing realistically, until finally it pulls all the way out to a panorama of Midgar itself, complete with iconic green smoke issuing forth from the chimneys of Shinra's power-generating facilities. Soon enough, flashes of the train from the opening sequence of the game appear, and Cloud appears, big-ass sword in tow. The sequence ends with a--we admit it--absolutely gorgeous close-up of Cloud with his sword.

The speculation now revolves around whether or not the "Technical Demo" of FFVII intimates that there will actually be a full remake of the game for the PS3, which is something that fans of Final Fantasy have been begging for for years. Final Fantasy VII is still arguably the most well-regarded of the Final Fantasy games, and speculation has been mounting about whether or not Square might attempt to cash in on that popularity by issuing a remake. Considering that this is a company that's announced at least three other games, as well as an all-CGI movie, based on the characters and storyline of FFVII, we can't rule anything out at the moment. Square didn't state anything for certain at the press conference, but we will of course have more details as they come along.

I can safely say, that the only thing that will trump the new generation consoles are the only thing that have ever trumped them before... PC's.

I will be there opening day, and I know I'll get one, because no one else around here can afford it sadly. No network play for a while. :x

I remember the psp release, I was there opening day to get one, and all my friends at school had to sell their PS2's, or N64's and all their useless old games to Page3 and put the PSP on layaway, I waited two weeks for someone else to get one so we could play.

i will play reizvoll's since i am not too into games i can just use his when i want to play something so i dont have to spend around 500 bucks to play it once or twice a month lol

i saw some of the game graphics and they look AWESOME. i cannot wait for some of the games to come out so i can play them with reiz. the game, i cant remember the name of it, that is sorta of like grand theft auto or something is going to be a sweeet game and the football game graphics are pretty incredible too.

The game that you saw was called "2 Days to Vegas", and I heard someone from gamespot say that they would be about $540. That's only hearsay and speculation, but I'd say it was a good guess.

I told people at school that it was my vacation pictures that I took with my PSP (I laugh at gullible people at school.) They all believed me because even the people at distances look absolutely real.

he really did tell people that AND i ever showed some girls a picture of a car on there and was like look at my new car! do u like it? and they were all like omg that looks sweeeet it was quite funny. i love gullible people also.

2 days to vegas is going to be an awesome game!
