Will Prestonsburg even have a team next year?

If I was the coach at Pburg I’d probably resign? Don’t know the guy but he could be the best coach in the country but you have to have some talent to work with. No diss on the other players but after looking their stats up from last season they graduated a lot and the 2 best would be returners have left

If they have 7 or 8 boys out playing, I would be surprised. That program seems to be in shambles for the last couple of years.

I tried to warn folks at the high school what would end up happening and they basically banned me from coaching at the school. Now here we are. They thought I was “too negative” when in fact I’m connected with the parents and knew exactly what was going to happen. For them to have gotten so much right with football and baseball, it’s almost like basketball was purposely sabotaged. Now all of the would be guys interested in coaching this program that could turn them around have zero interest because they’ve been passed over time and time again.

This could really cause some problems within the team. Watts shot it a lot last year, Keathley will double his shot attempts! Dials and Maynard need be ready to take back seat.

Prestonsburg is officially the worst team in the region. East Ridge is on the rise. Watch out for them Warriors this year.

First part isn’t too far off. Not so sure about the second part though.

I think he meant that they won’t be last now that Pburg will take that spot so technically they are moving up (1 spot).

Maybe a coaching change at PHS would draw more talent out, but what do I know.

Since the 16-17 season, Prestonsburg has had 6 coaches. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Prestonsburg shot itself in the foot when they let Brandon Gearheart and Justin Allen go. If they had left them alone to build the program, they'd be talked about each year as one of the top teams in the 15th Region.

I believe Pburg has had 4 different head coaches in the last 4 years. Since the last hire couldn't keep the two best players on the team going into this season and the man who hired him is no longer in Floyd County then the way the wind is blowing I'd say there's a good chance we'll be looking for the 5th coach in 5 years pretty soon. Heck, then maybe next year we'll go for the 6th in 6 then perhaps we can hit the magical 7th in 7 after that. It's a sad joke. Pburg isn't a basketball school like the other two schools in the county, granted, but it still gets plenty of support from the people in this town. We do live in Kentucky, after all. Sad to see a program that gets the kind of support that it does just get completely neglected the way that it has. Too much politics and too many backroom deals have went on with the program in the last decade and this is the result. BCF4L is correct, it is so bad that it almost feels like it's been intentionally sabotaged from the inside at this point. The people that really know basketball and care about kids in Pburg have basically been told to sit down and shut up time and time again. I hate it for the kids here. There are a ton of very athletic kids at PHS right now that contribute significantly to other sports that would absolutely love to play basketball and would be very good players, but why would they come out to play? What's the motivation? There's no stability, no hype, no attraction, no accountability, no discipline, no support from the administration... no hope. Nobody wants to play for that. I hate that Keithley and Shutts left because they're both extremely talented kids, but I don't blame them. They're both basketball players that were playing for a non-basketball school that doesn't even seem to care about basketball at all. Why wouldn't they leave for places that support their basketball programs and take them seriously? I love my home, but man it sucks here sometimes. If they do decide to hire somebody new then at least make it someone who loves Pburg deeply. That seems to me like the best solution at this point. The job seems to be a nightmare for anyone who just wants to go somewhere to coach basketball.

From what I’ve been hearing, It actually sounds like numbers will surprisingly be a lot better this season. There are a lot of athletes who have chosen not to play basketball for various reasons but from the sound of it, many of those kids are talking about coming back out. P burg did have someone helping on the bench a couple of years ago that was definitely not a great fit for the program. That issue was taken care of before last season so they have taken some positive steps. Clearly it’ll take a couple of years to get it headed in the right direction. Similar to what they’ve seen with Football and Baseball. Remember it wasn’t that long ago that Prestonsburg was gutted with many kids transferring out to schools like Paintsville, JC and Pikeville. Unless we’re talking about 5A and 6A sized schools, situations like that don’t exactly get fixed over night. It takes years. I hate to see any program at any area school suffer.

I guess one positive you could say about this move for Pburg is that the scoring and shot distribution should be much more even which means opponents can’t focus 95 percent of their game plan on Keathley. Sometimes having the best player doesn’t mean you have the best team.

How good is his kid?

He is a great offensive player, spends a lot of time in the gym working on his game, but mainly just the offensive side. I don't know the kid personally, nor am I bashing him in anyway, but you can tell what he works on and what he doesn't work on. He can score at any level, great handle with the ball as well. Kid just hasn't been in a good/stable situation at Pburg the last few years, I don't know if going into Martin Co will be any better, time will only tell that.

I know he has had a lot of high major offers, and I hope that he succeeds and gets to that level, he definitely has the work ethic, but he's going to have work as hard as he ever has to get to that level, especially on the defensive end.

Just looked him up per Verbel Commits Bowling Geen, UT Martin, Ohio, Southeast Missouri State & Texas A&M Corpus Christi.  2-mac teams, 2- OVC teams & 1 southland I don't know if I would call them high majors.

Well, if you looked up his offers then why didn't you just look up highlights to see how good he was on your own instead of asking?

It’s easier to ask!  Then investigate!!!

Shoot, I struggle to put up what would be equivalent of 50pts anymore just shooting in the yard. No pressure and nobody else there watching.  Well, other than my dogs and maybe a few squirrels passing by on occasion  Smile

I wish Keithly the absolute best of luck, Congrats on all the offers so far and more to come.
