Remember when I commented on the Martin/Paintsville thread and said “someone gets to play Paintsville in the play in game. Oof.”? Yeah, that someone is us!
Pburg is a different team than what the Tigers saw a couple weeks ago. You can see them playing with urgency and a desire to win. That means something. I think if the Blackcats can limit made 3’s, it’ll be a tight game. I’m going to say the Blackcats squeak this one out playing inspired basketball after being royally screwed at Betsy Layne. Go Blackcats!

I think the new “big” lineup that Tackett has been using has proven to be very effective and it seems like the team has better chemistry with it. I think that size on the floor will help us matchup better with Paintsville tonight than we did in the first game when we were using a more guard heavy lineup. The thing that worries me the most tonight is giving up offensive rebounds. We gave up some huge offensive rebounds in both the district tournament games that almost cost us the first one and probably did cost us the second one, so if we do that tonight it will cost us dearly because Paintsville is better than both BL and LC. We will have to play our best game of the season to keep this season alive.
Hail Blackcats!
Hail Blackcats!

I watched Pburg play at the All A vs Pikeville and the Reynolds kid was one of Pburg's better players. Watched on WPRG the game other night and didn't see him. Does he still play?

Give me pburg 76-71. Prestonsburg is a team who has gotten better throughout the season and is a team nobody wants to see in the region tourney.

Prestonsburg had a good gameplan early on, defensively anyways. Going into that 2-3 was a good strategy, and staying in bc Paintsville couldn't buy a basket. Offensively it was the same old story with them, one player trying to do too much and the others just get disinterested very quickly. Pburg had the lead going into half, Shutts hit a few shots and played some great defense, he is going to be a special player if he continues working and is in a good situation. Idk why Pburg changed things up defensively, maybe to try and throw Paintsville off? But when they seen that man-to-man, it was over. Paintsville had easier routes to the basket and used their size & quickness. Even tho it was still a 3-point game going into the 4th, still felt like it was over from that point, Paintsville made their free throws late to put the game away, it was a balanced effort for the Tigers.
Paintsville moves onto to play Pike Central in the regional tournament, first meeting this season. As for Prestonsburg, they will enter what will be an interesting off-season. Have Seniors moving on who didn't have any sort of consistency in regard to coaches. Speaking of, will Pburg want to go through with another year of Harold Tackett? I understand they upset Lawrence in district and took BL to 4 overtimes in the championship, had Paintsville on the ropes for a spot in the region, they played well to end the season, but from my standpoint, and I would assume others it just wouldn't be enough to warrant him another season. Who knows what is going to happen with Keathley, I've already heard rumblings that he is leaving, which that seemed to been the chatter last year too. If he decides to stay, along with the Shutts kid, and a new crop of young talent coming up, the administration will have to make a home-run hire if that is the direction they go. A lot of questions with not many answers going into the off-season.

If Keithley and Schutts both leave then it won't matter who the HC is next season.
I think there's a good chance that more athletes in the school play basketball next season, regardless, but you'd probably get alot more to come out if there was some kind of hype build up around the program, which just wasn't there all season this year. I'm not really sure what the reason is exactly for that. Seems like kids these days are more hesitant to stick their necks out for something that they aren't excited about or believe is going to fail. The Tackett hire, unfortunately, didn't really excite anybody in town and having 4 coaches in the last 4 or 5 years just hurts a program's development deeply and leads to apathy towards it from within. I don't blame Tackett for that, it just is what it is. Pburg had the horses to make it to the semi final game in the regional, I believe that, but they just never were able to put it all together. Even in the LC, BL, and Paintsville games in the tournaments which I would call our best performances all year, all 3 of those teams had absolutely horrible offensive 1st halves. Now, you can credit Tackett for gameplanning a big lineup in a 2-3 for those offensive shortcomings, but there were still A LOT of open shots missed by those 3 teams in those 3 first halves. Not to mention that to be one of the biggest teams in the region our rebounding was terrible from day 1 until the very end of this Paintsville game. I can't tell that it ever got any better. I'd say it's very possible that we gave up on average more offensive rebounds to opposing teams than any other team in the region. This was just not a very good team in regards to basic basketball fundamentals, but they were an incredible team in regards to raw talent and size. I hate it for them that they weren't as good as they should have been. Like BCF4L said in another post, watching this team play with good ball movement almost broke your heart because it was so beautiful, but you just had the feeling that at some point it was going to regress again away from that fundamental play. They just didn't have what they needed to see it through.
