My mind hasn't changed. They will be  3-4 games over/under .500 at season's end.  30 years w/o a playoff series win. Strek continues.

Yep, same oh, same oh!

Hey, OSH, is it time to get excited again? Reds have won four straight, and are only 2 1/2 games out in the wild card race. They’re reeling me back in again.
#65
Are they starting to show some life?
#66
Only a game and a half out of being a wild card team right now. I at least hope they can keep it interesting through the summer.

The Reds, Bengals, and beautiful women have broken my heart more times than I could ever begin to count. I don't trust any of the three, but I am forever a romantic. I'm hoping for one more championship fling with one or more of the three before the sun sets on my Old School ass.

Reds beat the Twins in a rain shortened game. Steer with the two-run homer and Lodolo pitches six innings of two run baseball for the win. Reds now 4 games over .500. Since the 3-7 start, they've played at a 91-win pace. Reds just one game behind the Padres for a WC berth . They need to sweep the Twinkies tomorrow before hitting the road to face the hated Cardinals.

Reds began a very important stretch of 12 games against some very good teams---Yankees, Red Sox, Padres & Phillies. They win the first of those 12 tonight with a 6-1 win over the Yankees at GAB. EDLC was the offensive star with a single, triple, & homer. Lodolo got the win with five inning of one-run baseball. The much maligned Reds bullpen pitched the final four innings of scoreless ball. The Reds highly heralded rookie pitcher Chase Burns takes the hill tomorrow in his Major League debut. Reds are currently three games over .500 at 41-38.

Starting pitching has been very good, and the offense is a lot better than last year……so why are the Reds only three games over .500? Too many close losses. If they can turn that around in the second half (and get Hunter Greene back at full strength) then I think they still have a very realistic playoff shot. They are only two games out of a wild card berth right now.

The close losses and blown late leads have been killers. I literally took a day off from the Reds after they blew that second game at St. Louis. They had a  5-2 lead in the bottom of the 8th with no on and two outs for the Cards. They somehow found a way to lose it. I took the next day off. You are right, VH, all those 1-0 losses and those terrible blown late leads(which started on Opening Day) is the reason we are just three games over par, instead of 11 or 12 games over .500 .

Small correction from the original post about the win over the Yankees in the first game of the series. Lodolo pitched only 4 1/3 innings. The bullpen pitched the final 4 2/3 innings to finish up. I'm sure it hasn't been lost on you astute baseball observers how much pitchers are coddled in 2020's baseball. It's a big deal now if a pitcher goes 7 full innings in a game. It's also a big deal if a reliever pitches on back-to back days, and rare to see a reliever pitch on three consecutive days.

Remember Mike Marshall, the reliever who pitched with the Twins and the Dodgers? In 1974, he pitched 208 1/3 innings, all in relief. He appeared in something like 106 of the Dodgers 162 regular season games. In a doubleheader once(I think it was in 1973), he pitched three scoreless innings in the first game and came back and pitched 8 1/3 innings in relief in a long extra inning nightcap. Can you imagine a reliever pitching 11 innings in a doubleheader today? Of course there aren't even traditional doubleheaders anymore.

Someone by the name of Nolan Ryan once threw 235 pitches in a single game in 1974. He pitched 13 innings, struck out 19, walked 10 , and got the 4-3 win. For those who say pitchers of old didn't throw 100 mph like pitchers today, well, Nolan Ryan threw 100+ and pitched until he was 46 years old. Pitchers have been conditioned to believe that their arms will fall off if they pitch two or three days in a row. If a starter goes five or six innings, that's considered good nowadays. Ridiculous how pitchers are coddled. Okay, I just had to vent.

Oh, one more you might remember. Remember Luis Tiant of the Red Sox with his odd delivery? He pitched complete games against the Reds in game 1 and game 4. he threw 156 pitches in game 1 and 163 pitches in game 4. He also tossed eight innings in relief in that great game. He threw a total of 475 pitches in those three WS games. I can't even fathom a pitcher nowadays even coming close to doing anything like that. Yes, Major League players, especially pitchers are coddled today. A Reds player was scratched from the lineup recently because of leg soreness. I wonder if Pete Rose ever had soreness in his leg? One player sat with a stuffy nose due to allergies. Wonder if Cal Ripken ever has a stuffy nose during his 2,600+ streak?

Okay, I'm stepping off my soapbox Now, GET THE HELL OFF MY LAWN!!!!

Reds 2024 draft pick and the #2 pick in the draft make his debut tonight vs. the Yankees. I am for one looking forward to seeing how he looks with the $9.25 million signing bonus he got last July. So far in 3 levels of minor league ball he has had just 1.77 ERA.
#74
Reds beat the Yankees for the second night in a row. Lux delivers the walk off single in the 11th for the 5-4 win. Chase burns struck out the first five men he faced in his ML debut. He allowed three runs in five innings, but some questionable defense let him down . Nice debut for the young man. He's gonna be spectacular. Reds now 42-38 on the season.

Huge win today, haven’t been many comeback wins for the Reds this season. 42-39 in the first half (44-40 now). 42-39 in the second half would be 84 wins, that wouldn’t be enough to make the playoffs. Something like 46-35, which would get them to 88 wins, will probably be the minimum. It’s doable, just keep winning series. And if they get in, if Greene is healthy and with this new kid if he can live up to the hype, and with Andrew Abbott having a career year (he might start the all-star game, should definitely make the roster), the Reds would be a dangerous opponent for any team in a short series.

I believe we're starting to see some results of Tito.  This team could be very good the second half.

Looked at the standings last night, looks like the Reds are giving themselves a chance in the division and making the playoffs.

That division is loaded though this year.  Alot of good teams with winning records.  Making the playoffs will be tough but the Reds seem to be hanging in there. Keep trucking anything can happen!

I agree with all you said.  McClain and my boy, Steer,  are rounding into form. Look for a big second half from that tandem. Also, we have Hays, Marte and Greene set to return soon. Late innings scare me with our bullpen. I'd like to add a big time left-handed lockdown guy for the 8th or 9th innings. Preferably, add two solid bullpen arms .  We're not bad, but we're not quite there yet. Need a few more pieces. As VH said, with our starting pitching, we are a very dangerous opponent in a short series if we slip into the playoffs. We've let too many close games slip away that we should have won. It will probably come back to haunt us.

I would be all for it. It's just what they need. However, Castellini isn't likely to go there again. Aroldis left on bad terms.

Looking at the schedule, after Cincy goes to Philly this weekend, they get a seven game homestand next week against the bad Marlins and the historically bad Rockies. There is a real chance to make some hay, even with losing the series in Boston the Reds are only a game and a half out in the wild card race right now.

Cincinnati Redcoats go into Philly on Independence Day and come away victorious 9-6. Need to steal one more in this series.

Ah, the Reds. A golden opportunity to get really into the thick of the wild card race…..and they have lost four straight, including two straight ass-whippings at home by the sub .500 Marlins. I really feel like they need to sweep these next five home games before the All-Star break (two with Miami, three with Colorado) to have any legitimate hope in the second half. But knowing these guys, they’ll lose the series to the Rockies, one of the worst MLB teams ever.

Yeah, your thoughts go hand in hand with mine.  With the front office staff currently in place, I really question if this team will ever be any better.  They will have to make some moves to improve the offense and bullpen to move upward.

The FO hamstrung this team from the get go. All of us that follow the Reds knew they needed a big thumper in the mifddle of the lineup and a couple of lockdown relievers to take care of the last third of games. Instead, we got no thumper and some bullpen arms(Rogers, Barlow, Gibaut, etc...) that probably shouldn't even be pitching at the ML level. The Reds were screwed from the start. Wish Mark Cuban would buy the team.

I'm not counting on the Reds winning a World Series again in my lifetime. Think the last time I was really excited about their chances was when they acquired Griffey Jr.

Maybe the team is cursed after selling their soul for a title in '90 during the Marge Schott era.

I don't see them being relocated given how far back their history goes, but it's going to take a major shift in the landscape before I can realistically think of them as more than a Wild Card or fluking into the division. A change in ownership is probably needed for anything past that, but throwing money at problems isn't tried and true-- Ballmer hasn't had success with the Clippers either.

I haven't kept up with MLB much yet this year. Like the NBA I normally don't watch much until the playoffs roll around.

I did look at the NL standings last night and the Reds are above 500. Not to far out of a wildcard spot at the moment and they do seem to be hanging in there at the moment, giving themselves a chance.

I pull for 2 MLB teams.  The Braves are my first team and the Reds second.  At least the Reds are doing better than the Braves right now, in the standings.  Undecided Smile
