Paintsville vs. Magoffin Co. 1/30/25
#1
Tigers take their 3 game win streak on the road in a tough district game against the defending region champs in Magoffin. Obviously isn't the same Magoffin team as last year, but going over there and walking out with a win has always been tough. Outside of Russell who is averaging nearly 28 ppg, he doesn't have a whole lot of help after that, gameplan should be simple for Paintsville, let Russell get his and force the others to try and beat you. Defensive gameplan worked to a tee against Central, I'm sure there will be some tweaks thrown at Magoffin to try and contain Russell, he is a great player and great players always find a way, but if they can contain him in anyway, that puts more reliance on the rest of the team, and Magoffin just doesn't seem to have the scoring to keep up with what Paintsville has, nor do they have the size to contend.

Paintsville asserted their size in the 1st half against Central, they should do the same in this one too, especially getting Woods/Cole a touch every time down the floor to keep them within the flow & rhythm of the offense. Woods likes to start out on the high post, mainly on each elbow and will just back you down to the basket, and he's got some nice footwork as well, he can spin around his defender, and nice drop step as well. Cole loves to drive to the basket, he does a lot of his damage on the baselines, he has a great build but is deceptively quick with his first step. Would love to see Kinner drive to the basket more as well especially with his size, even tho he can shoot the ball from the perimeter, not many can stop him once he gets a full head of steam.

I think Paintsville keeps the momentum rolling, Magoffin will keep it close but Tigers pull it out in the end.

Paintsville-68
Magoffin-58

@billymoore8123 went ahead and put together a little preview for you ahead of the game.

Tigers go on the road and get an easy win at Magoffin 75-50

Paintsville shouldn’t have any issues handing Magoffin. If they can stop Russell it will be over quick.

Paintsville wins 68-53

I am picking the Tigers, but Going to Salyersville and trying to get a win in basketball is like playing against a team of octopuses – it's always 8 against 5!

Paintsville-71 Magoffin-41 Final. First time seeing these teams at Magoffin. The game went pretty much how I figured. Magoffin jumped out quick with a small lead but when paintsville started using their bigs, everything changed. It was like someone let the air out of the room.I felt like Magoffin really didn't come in with any game plan on how to handle Woods and Cole. I felt like their only real game plan is to make sure that Russell got the ball(understandably). By the half it was 22-26 Paintsville. The third quarter is when Paintsville really dropped the hammer. Paintsville would go on a 27 point run to Magoffins 6 points (53-28). The fourth continued on such the same. At the 6 minute mark, Slone started pulling his starters for rest and letting the bench play. Russell continued to score to the end. I think Russell carries a lot of weight trying make wins happen by himself. I can only imagine how good he would be if he didn't have all the weight on his shoulders. I will say this about the Tigers, They are about the most unselfish team I have seen all year.Everyone get looks and I think they are truly happy when someone else scores. I think Magoffin has Phelps on Saturday and the Tigers host Russell too.
