Portsmouth Speedway Not Racing In 2025
#1
They just announced on their facebook page that they would not be running any races at Portsmouth in this 2025 calendar year.  With the opening of 201 this year, there could be 200 cars a night there.

I live kinda across the hill from 201.  Years back,  from the house here,  I could hear the loud speaker from the race track.  Had some buddies that used to race there years back.

I've never been to the Portsmouth track.  Some family of mine used to go there every chance they got.  They really liked it there.

I spent my weekends at 201 from age 10 to 17. My dad and uncle use to race, but now just my uncle races crate late models mostly at 191 and Rockcastle

Seems to be a common problem with racetracks. 201 got in big trouble for not turning in money on taxes and that's what shut them down for so long.  These tracks are money makers and investments for people.  Then they get greedy because a track also has to spend a lot of money in payouts and upkeep to keep the track going and I think that's where the disconnect starts.

Yeah, at the end of the day, there is not much profit.

So cool that 201 will be racing. Went there a couple of times back in the day and had a blast. Lonesome Pine in Coeburn Va was our go-to, still running and still awesome.

Been to every track within 4 hours of Mud Creek, Kentucky except for Lonesome Pine.

It's sad to see that PRP won't be running any in 2025.

For a decade or so weekly points races or unsanctioned $3k-$5k to win shows at PRP were just as good as any race you would see in the country because the regional talent was so strong. Boggs, McGuire, Carrier Jr, Conley's, Hawkins brothers, etc each put on a show almost every weekend. You even got to see it at 201 back when the Breeding's first purchased the track. Those guys put butts in seats. Some of those drivers are gone now or aren't racing very much at all. You can also pay $10-$20 a month and watch super late models from the comfort of your own home in HD. It's tough for all track promoters and owners to break even.

I'm glad 201 is attempting to run this year though and I hope they have success. It'll be nice to have a local track to go to again.
