Somerset 23 Prestonsburg 6
#1
I honestly thought this game was going to be a running clock…. man was I wrong, and I’m so glad I was. Prestonsburg fought hard tonight. We had the ball inside the Somerset 20 yard line FIVE times tonight and just couldn’t punch it in. Yes you read that correctly… five times.

I am so proud of the 2024 Blackcats. Majorly overachieved and got this program and community back to life. No one realizes how bad of shape this program was. The amount of apathy was unreal.

I know most of you all read this so…. THANK YOU for your grit, determination, loyalty, hard work, and HEART. You’ve made your mark on this programs history.

25 year old Wes Hager’s first year:
11 wins for the first time since 2009
First playoff win since 2017
District Championship
Regional Finalist (first time since 2014)

The future is bright in Prestonsburg. Congrats to Somerset!

Very proud of Prestonsburg this year, hopefully this brings in a few transfers for next year and get back to region. Patton will be a problem next szn.

An injured Elliott that was even questionable tonight may have been the difference. I honestly didn’t expect the score to be within striking distance late. It was 16-6 until late in the 4th with Prestonsburg threatening multiple times. Unfortunately just weren’t able to punch it in. But man, what a season. So proud of this group and the staff. So many questioned the hire, the June vacations (weird argument) and the overall talent of Prestonsburg after a pretty disappointing season last year but Hager came in and instantly put this program back on the map. Increase line play, some play makers in the secondary and get more help behind Patton and Hatfield in the backfield and this team could make even more noise next season. Great job, Blackcats!

Weather conditions played a major factor tonight. PBerg got everything they wanted in this game Somerset turned the ball over 4 times 3 fumbles and an interception or it would have been a running clock. But that’s is part of the game. Everything that could have possibly went right for pBerg to win was in place and they still couldn’t pull it off. Congrats on a good season

Proud of the Blackcats. They fought hard tonight and the defense played a great football game. Our coaches put together a great game plan defensively and the boys made plays on that side of the ball all night. Offensively, Pburg got a heckuva performance out of Kain Patton. Kid ran the ball like a madman tonight. Just couldn’t really get much else going outside of him. Not having a healthy Dalton Elliott did hurt. I hate it for him, because he tried like hell to go out there and play through it. Missed his presence on defense as well.

Overall, I’m very happy with tonight’s performance and how this season went. I’m excited about the future as well. I think Prestonsburg can have one of the best defenses in the mountains next season. Just need to thicken up. A full off season for this bunch returning is crucial. They have the heart and abilities, just lacked size and strength in a lot of areas.

Congrats to Somerset. Y’all were big and had some dudes and capitalized when you had to. Good luck at Owensboro Catholic next week.

Hate to lose Dalton Elliott and Alex Harris. Both have been fantastic representatives of Blackcat football, the school, and our community. Very proud of them and all they’ve accomplished during their time. They’ve laid the foundation for future success with the guys behind them. Proud also of Cade Nairn and David Scott. Cade is a great young man that never complains. Same can be said for David. He wasn’t eligible until the Martin Co game this year, which is where he transferred from. He got to play in that game and unfortunately suffered a knee injury in practice the following week and had surgery yesterday and couldn’t be there tonight.

Proud to be a Blackcat!

Good game by Prestonsburg. Glad to see the Black Cats getting things going the right way. Glad to see Somerset get a 2nd Regional Championship in a row. The road gets a lot tougher next week, but win or lose the Briar Jumpers have continued to build under Coach Clevenger's guidance. I thought they might take a step back this season, but they've really come on after a bit of a slow start.

The weather was really a factor for Somerset. They had to play in cold rain on a sloppy field while Prestonsburg was warm sunshine on a dry turf field. Both teams play in the same weather Buckaroo. The weather being a factor for one team and not the other is asinine.
This Blackcat team got better every week. They carried themselves with class. They made no excuses, and they left their best effort on the field. Coaches, parents, students and the community are very proud. Thank you for a wonderful season and making this old Blackcat happy.

Someone explain to me how the weather played a factor in this game? Somerset wasn’t a passing team coming in to this game. As a matter of fact, Somerset had more passing yards in this game than they did in 75% of their games all year long lol. Get outta here with that weather shit and give Prestonsburg some credit. They played in the same weather and on the same field. Pburg had their opportunities to win this game, but Somerset’s defense stepped it up when they had to and stopped them. Great season for the Blackcats, and regardless of their schedule, they still exceeded everyone’s expectations.
