November 9, 2024 Opening day of KY deer rifle season. To me it's like being a kid waiting on Christmas to come. Who's pumped about it baby! I know Ol Kong here, can't be the only one excited about it on this site
Are you a trophy hunter, a collector of deer antlers, with a wall full of mounted deer heads, trophies?
Are you a meat hunter, not picky at all, no matter the size, if it comes by I'm taking a crack at it, you can't eat those giant horns anyway?
Or you like Ol Kong here, both a meat eater and a collector of deer antlers? My household will eat usually anywhere from 1 to 3 deer a year. Whenever we run out we always wish we had more lol! I'll usually take a crack at whatever comes by, regardless of size, or being a doe, or regardless of antler size. Overall I'm not a very picky hunter. Unless I know a big buck is in the area, then I'll focus on it for the most part. According to Miss Kong, I better not be having anymore taxidermy bills, or she might explode lol!
Do you have any deer hunting traditions with your family or friends? Do you camp out around your hunting spot?
Do you have certain weather conditions you prefer hunting? I prefer frost or snow. Seems like it's hard to get a snow during rifle season at times anymore.
Supposed be kinda warm this weekend the last I checked. That's okay. My dad's in his 80s, that's about the only way he can stand to hunt. Maybe this will help him get to go some.
Are you seeing plenty of deer on your trail camera's? Or are you like Ol Kong here, I've never set up a trail camera in my life. Guess I still like to do some things the old school way lol!
Is there anything else you want to add?
Just outta curiosity, have any of you taken a Boone and Crockett, Buck Masters, or Pope and Young deer? I never have. I have had two chances at deer like this. I found a way to blow both of those chances! It's been twenty some years since both of those situations happened. I've still not gotten over neither one of them
Good luck to everyone that's going hunting and stay safe.

Here it is just a few days before season starts, and I'm sitting outside in a pair of shorts! That's wild! Feels kinda hot outside.
Still seeing some pretty good deer sign, rubs and scrapes.

Day 3 of rifle season. Observations made thus far:
In some places bucks are still running together. In other places they're chasing does. Bucks have been seen fighting in some spots. I guess it just kinda varies right now from place to place. Almost like they're in the mist of the transition period right now.
One deer processing place I know of has seen less business right now, as compared to this same point and time last season. Warmer temperatures might have something to do with this. Once temperatures drop those numbers may begin to rise.
As of right now, try not to get to hot while hunting Try to stay cool!
Good luck and stay safe!

Some more observations:
Like a buddy of mine has said many times, once you get a deer on the ground, that's when your work really begins. That's some true philosophy right there.
The old saying that I find to be true especially these days, nothing will remind you that you're outta shape like dragging a deer out of the woods! I definitely find this to be the case, especially since I got some years on me now!
Day 4 of season, seems to be a little cooler today. Yesterday evening felt cooler than Sunday evening.
Good Luck and as always stay safe

The second Saturday of rifle season observations: I'm reminded of the song "The Sound of Silence". That's more or less what I heard was silence. Other than a light breeze blowing and leaves gently crushing under my feet lol! Maybe two or three gunshots way of at a distance, I mean way off, not close at all.
The temperature feels a lot cooler.
No deer movement where I was, but a rather peaceful hunt.

I didn't go hunting today, although I do have a observation: Deer steaks and loaded baked potatoes, that's an awesome combination, for supper
